First I had two expensive car repairs. Then I was told I'm gonna be laid off at work. The hotel from our weekend vacation double-billed me for the room causing overdraft fees on my bank account. Now the bloodydamned external harddrive on my computer is screwing up ( Read more... )

It is definitely worth calling the hotel and speaking to a manager about the double billing and resulting fees. This ended up happening to us on our Colorado trip (we were splitting the hotel fee with my brother and parents, and they charged the entire thing to our card - we shoulda just left a check!) and we only found out when we went to go check in at the next hotel on our trip home. Absolutely horrible. Got it cleared up, although I don't remember how we ended up getting gas and other assorted important things, but it involved several calls back and forth to the owner of the house.

The overdraft fees are a direct result of their screwup, and should, in good faith, be covered by the hotel. Barring that, contest the second charge with your bank, and they might reverse the fees.

Thanks, Liz. I called the hotel as soon as I realized it, but I'd been overdrawn for days. The hotel was very responsive. I have overdraft protection on my bank account, but I forgot about the $28 bank fee for dipping into it. I called the hotel and left a message for the manager (who'd left for the day) about it. I think, if I send them a copy of the statement, they'll reimburse me on that too. I'll just have to wait for him to get back to me.

you might know someone who has an external hard drive you could use with your Mini. Not a Mac user, myself, but surely you're not the only one?

Thanks! I just bit the bullet and bought a new external drive. I just wish I could get my files off of the old one. The tech at Fry's couldn't get the drive to work. When she tested the enclosure, that was fried too! Maybe a power surge or lightning strike got me. I think the old external HD may have been plugged into a weaker power strip than the heavy-duty one the computer itself is plugged into. The external drive issue was yesterday. Today, I couldn't get the computer to power up and ran to 2 Apple stores between Round Rock and Barton Creek and back. That's before coming in to work. I've just finished the 1st hour and a half of my shift and I'm already exhausted.

Yeah. Sucks mightily. Still, Jeremy said he *might* be able to help me salvage data off the old drive. It gives me, at least a tiny bit of hope.

I had two Western Digital drives go bad on me within about a month on my Mac mini. Apparently WD drives do not play nicely with 10.5 or later. Got a Seagate and it's working like a champ. And I added a Time Capsule for backup, because I don't want to pay $450 for partial data recovery ever again.

Interesting, Andrew. BTW, guess who made that harddrive that went bad? I just shelled out for an Iomega, specifically formatted for Mac. The enclosure is actually designed like my MacMini, so it fits under it perfectly. I got a 1TB drive and partitioned it in half. One half will be a backup disk. At least until I can get something else for backup

how big was the old HDD, if you don't mind my asking? I've a few sitting around here that I'm not using. And external cases are cheap.

It was 500Mb. I broke down and bought a 1 Tb Iomega drive formatted especially for Macs. I partitioned it in half to use half as a backup disk. It's still kind of putting my eggs in one basket, even if the basket has two compartments. My computer itself acted like it was going to die too, but it seems to have been an issue w/ the power strip. I ran from home in Round Rock, to the Domain, to Barton Creek, to home, to work this afternoon. This and the external HD dying has made for an exhausting weekend. Now, I'm back at work not feeling rested at all. Sheesh!
