Year 1 - Autumn - Bennett

So I've finally found time to sit down and write up my journal.  Autumn has been a strange and hectic season.

Even though summer had passed there was still time to plant some late beans in the garden. I had been making some homemade compost and used it on the beans, and I have to say it made a big difference to the size of my crop.  It's good to have something I can dry and keep to eat over the winter.

A strange thing happened at the beginning of Autumn, a golden lamp appeared outside my house.  I thought one of the others had left it there as a joke but they all denied it, I'm not sure what to think.

Bonnie still visits alot, and I'm trying, I really am.... but she's just so annoying!  I told her about the gold lamp and she suggested it was maybe a magic genie lamp!  How ridiculous is that!  This isn't Disneyland.  She said if it was magic she would wish for some pearls.  Seriously?  What a ridiculous request, I mean if you were going to wish for something it should be something really important, something important like, like a big blue sunhat!  I've always wanted one, just like Sophia Loren.....

Thankfully Bridget came along just then before things got totally ridiculous.  I think we are all getting cabin fever.

The same evening Thorn came visiting and started into a eulogy about soup!  Apparently he is really missing soup and wanted me to make him some.  Who does he think I am, his mother?  When I refused he got a bit upset so I did something really stupid, I mean, really, really stupid.  You know what I said about cabin fever and all?  Well, sometimes we all miss a bit of intimacy..... we miss having someone to love, we miss being loved.  Thorn wasn't too sure at first but as soon as he realised it meant getting naked, he was all for it!  Typical man...  Unfortunately I forgot Bridget was still here... I don't think she noticed though, she was too busy counting.

Last month Reuben brought over an old telescope he found on one of his scavenging trips.  Bridget was really upset with me and accused me of spying on her.  I mean really, why would I spy on her, she's my best friend.  Okay, okay, I might have been watching Thorn, and he has been visiting Bridget an awful lot lately, but I definitely wasn't spying on Bridget.  Thorn... Thorn... I can't stop thinking about him, I've even been dreaming about him.  He's a great guy, and fun to be around, but I can't help feeling he doesn't like me as much as I like him.

I hadn't been feeling well and invited Reuben around for a chat.  I know Callan is supposed to be our resident doctor-in-training, but after seeing how he reacted when Quinn went into labour I think I'll take my chances with Reuben.  I asked him about the Government film they made when the zombie apocalypse first started, wasn't sickness one of the first signs that you were changing?  Reuben laughed when I told him of my worries and assured me that as I hadn't been bitten by a zombie and was obviously not dead I didn't have anything to worry about.  I felt a bit foolish when he suggested I was maybe getting mixed up with the Influenza public information broadcast.  Come to think of it, I had been feeling a bit tired and lethargic.

But a week later, I had an epiphany, I wasn't sick, I was pregnant!  Seeing my swelling belly confirmed my diagnosis.  My hair has been growing alot quicker these past few months too, must be a side affect of the pregnancy, so I decided to stop shaving it, it was getting to be too much work.

I couldn't wait to tell everyone the good news, Thorn first of all.  To say he was surprised was an understatement, but he seemed pretty excited once he got used to the idea.  Bonnie was so excited and happy for me, I even agreed to be her BFF.  She has been my biggest support these past few months, Thorn calls round alot but he's not going to be the suppostive partner I thought he might be.

Another strange thing happened, I heard a noise outside one night and when I went out there was a big dog, or wolf, or something.  He seemed perfectly tame, but he had these weird glowing eyes.  It must be a side effect of the chemical.  He's the first animal we've seen in the area, I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

And the following day another stange thing happened!  My telescope was gone, just disappeared. I am pretty sure it was Bridget but she flat out denied it.  I mean, who else could it have been?  Mind you, I did have a hunt round their cottage and up at the old farm and I couldn't find it.  I don't think anyone else would have done it and it's not as if there are random strangers walking around out here in the middle of nowhere is it?

Anyway, autumn was coming to an end and I was actually looking forward to Bonnie's daily visits.  I even agreed to make her Godmother of my baby (not that I believe in God, but she does and it will make her happy).  She loves to play peek-a-boo with my bump, it's quite funny, I'm sure the baby would die of fright if it could actually see her!  Mental note to oneself, don't let Bonnie play peek-a-boo with baby once born.

My beautiful daughter, River, decided to make an appearance on the last day of autumn, or should I say night.  Bonnie had gone home so I was on my own and it was pretty scary, not to mention painful, but we'll skip over that bit....  Bonnie had knitted her a cute little hat and vest, she had knitted one for Rose too, I was glad River was a girl because Bonnie only seems to have black and pink wool.  Word obviously spreads fast here because when I went out the next morning there was a crib sitting outside my house.  It's pretty basic but someone has obviously put alot of work into it.  I wonder who it's from, Thorn's pretty good at building things, I mean he's just finished building a water pump at his house, do you think it could have been him?

Well, it's the end of autumn now, we're going on a supply run tomorrow to pick up some blankets and warm clothes, and the men have been busy the last few days chopping down some trees to keep us going though the winter.  I will pass this on to Bonnie when I see her tomorrow.
