I love this. Bush being compelled to do what he knows what is right. Horatio too. Bush, alone as he is, knows more about married love. They are so real, in the freezing rain. Thank you.

Hornblower - where no one says what they really mean, because that's just not done. ♥

Bush has an uncanny ability to tear right into your heart. Which would probably horrify him if he knew. Hee.

I'm glad you liked it, bb! Thanks again for bidding on me!

Wow! Nailed both of them, and the situation. Could slot it into the CSF canon very easily. Like redheadaholic - I found it painful but couldn't help the admiration.

Thank you so much! Bush's view of Hornblower's life and existence and choices is always so interesting to me - how he sees Hornblower clearly, but also through a haze of admiration and the desire to almost protect him.

This is so fantastically perfect. Your descriptions really set the scene, and Bush and Hornblower are just so spot on. This has to be canon! :) I also love how you've done was Forester did, keeping the bro-mance overtones kind of between the lines, but kind of blatant at the same time, if you know what I mean.

'Bush knows well enough that his surname is the only one to evoke an answer.'

I've always found it interesting that in the books you never hear them refer to each other by first names EVER. And it seems awkward when I contemplate using first names in fic because of that! I like your incorporation of that :)

There's very much a class distinction in Hornblower, even if it's only by rank. Also, there are so many mores in the time, the use of surnames is just easier. When they're alone in private is one thing, but any vestige of public, and I think they need to/would revert to keeping to surnames.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it! It's been a while since I've written them, but I love the structure that the era gives them, and the things they then have to fight against to get what they want. Thanks again!
