The Brothers Black

This is one of my more ridiculus Harry Potter theories, though I think you will find that it makes an amazing amount of sense. Sirius and Regulus are brothers. Sirius is the older of the two, and the Harry Potter fandom has always made a (logical) assumption that there is a year difference between the two. Who is to say that there is even that ( Read more... )

I've always thought the "turnaround time" for Regulus becoming a Death Eater and then backing out (and being killed) was a bit too short. (But it wouldn't be the first logical/mathematical/age error JKR has made.)

I really like the points you raise -- especially the binary star one. Fascinating.

You're right. It wouldn't be the first time she's made a mistake like that. Ages in HP always seem really messed up to me, but then again they're on wizard time, and live twice as long as we do... but that would not attest for the whole Regulus bit.
Thanks! The binary star bit was my favorite as well. She picks names so carefully it seems unlikely that she would have selected it by chance, but then again, I do have a tendency to over-read :)

Huh. That's interesting, it never even came to my mind that it could be a possiblity. Can of worms :o)

That theory makes a lot of sense. May I ask what provoked this?

PS: I love your icon.

hehe. My icon amuses me as well.

I was trying to work out some of the details in a fanfiction I want to write sometime before Book 7 appears. Nothing's even been written. Anways, some of the things that I was trying to work out just weren't laying out properly if Regulus graduated in '79. I was banging my head against a wall (figuratively). Then a thought occured to me: who says he graduated in '79? So I started researching it, and lo and behold, I came up with this. lol.

I really like this theory. Not only because it allows for more time for Regulus to get in and get out (which is a very good point, I might add), but also because it adds to the array of twins we see and it adds to Sirius as well. J.K. also believes in magic numbers (try and see how many 7's and 3's are in the books) and we so far only know two sets of twins: The identical Weasleys, the Patils (who are different in mindset) and now, perhaps, the Blacks, who may or may not be identical physically, but at least we know they were quite different personality-wise. This would give three sets of different types of twins and this would fit her M.O. quite well.
And I like the detail about the binary star-system too :-)

and the Patils ARE identical as well (I believe Hermione pointed this out, but can't remember where)

Yes, I think so too, but I couldn't remember if I actually read it or just imagined it, so I didn't write it :-)

got it!

When Colin expresses hope that Dennis will be sorted into Gryffindor, Harry assures him that "Brothers and sisters usually go in the same Houses, don't they?"

Hermione replies:
"Oh no, not necessarily. Parvati Patil's twin's in Ravenclaw, and they're identical. You'd think they'd be together, wouldn't you?"

it's in chapter 12 of Goblet of Fire, p. 174 in US hardcover, and more support for this (very likeable) theory.
