playlists

Now that I have ripped every CD I have owned and organized all of my digital music into a single library( stuff from eMusic, stuff from Amie street, etc..) I can carry all the music I own in the palm of my hand on my iPod. It is not that I have only a small amount of music, it is that the new iPod has this deviously wonderful storage capacity. Playlist? iPod? What are you talking about?

I'm a geezer, you know. I never got into using playlists, so i still mostly play by albums. I probably should try playlists, but the problem is that I'm often quite specific in what I want to listen to (Dylan songs from Blood on the Tracks or a particular recording of La Traviata or whatnot), so I suspect that I wouldn't use them much.

I also have a bit more music than you, it seems. I've ripped all my CDs, and that plus other digital stuff runs to maybe 2000 albums? Something like that. More than I can carry around on a device - heck, it won't even go on my laptop. On top of that there's the 1500 vinyl albums that I haven't even started digitizing yet.

Anyway - I might start looking into playlists. I tend to listen to the same stuff over and over for periods of time, and doing playlists for that would likely be useful.

hmmm...I have to admit having only 48 gigs of music helps... but with audiobooks, some video and roughly 200 podcasts on the iPod, I tend to run right at about 65 gigs loaded on it.

I am horrible about getting into musical ruts, but even worse about remembering which album which song is on. For me, having playlists helps me re-discover music. It will be interesting to see if having a visual display of the songs while they are playing helps. Back in the vinyl days, when I used to lay on the floor with the album cover in my hand while it was playing, I was much better at this.

oohh.. I would love the link, thanks.

are most of your lists manual or smartlists?

I have been thinking lately of creating a list of silly showtunes.. mixing avenue Q with funny girl, for example....
