Now that I have ripped every CD I have owned and organized all of my digital music into a single library( stuff from eMusic, stuff from Amie street, etc..) I can carry all the music I own in the palm of my hand on my iPod. It is not that I have only a small amount of music, it is that the new iPod has this deviously wonderful storage capacity.

I also have a bit more music than you, it seems. I've ripped all my CDs, and that plus other digital stuff runs to maybe 2000 albums? Something like that. More than I can carry around on a device - heck, it won't even go on my laptop. On top of that there's the 1500 vinyl albums that I haven't even started digitizing yet.
Anyway - I might start looking into playlists. I tend to listen to the same stuff over and over for periods of time, and doing playlists for that would likely be useful.

I am horrible about getting into musical ruts, but even worse about remembering which album which song is on. For me, having playlists helps me re-discover music. It will be interesting to see if having a visual display of the songs while they are playing helps. Back in the vinyl days,when I used to lay on the floor with the album cover in my hand while it was playing, I was much better at this.

are most of your lists manual or smartlists?
I have been thinking lately of creating a list of silly showtunes.. mixing avenue Q with funny girl, for example....
