Two Weeks Without Porn Was Dull

► Two weeks since it crashed, and a week and a half at the shop, I finally got my computer back today. Turned out my hard drive's connectors were degrading. Luckily they were able to copy the entire contents of the drive into a new 500 GB hard drive. They also installed a brand spanking new 2 GB RAM stick. Nice upgrade from my old 512 ( Read more... )

MalcolmD says: Bad connectors on the hard drive, eh? Hmm, mine had similar, though more drastic, symptoms shortly after you made your post, and I've been assuming that the data is irretrievable. :-/

I barely got my last, otherwise unsaved drawings off of it before it stopped responding altogether. :-x

Your failed drive wouldn't happen to have been a Seagate, would it? XD

Looking at the label on the old drive, it says Western Digital. In it's defense, the drive did last almost 4 years.

I really lucked out by not losing all the data. One of the shop workers called and left a message Friday after I left to house sit. The message said the drive was ruined and I spent all weekend assuming I had lost everything. It wasn't until I phoned them back Monday morning that I found out they were able to save everything. Very lucky.

I'm relieved to hear you were able to get your drawings off of your drive. That would have been awful to lose.

MalcolmD says: I don't believe that I've ever had a hard drive fail before--they just get too small for the current space requirements and I have to set them aside. :-x

Amusingly, I was saved from the full brunt of this failure by my previous bad fortune. I've had two viruses this year that were serious enough that I had to reformat my hard drive each time. The last time, I couldn't borrow a big enough external drive with which to transfer my files, so I had to purchase one. Now, I'm overjoyed that I was forced to make that back-up on my own drive, because it means that I only lost a month or two worth of additions, AND I have additional support while I decide whether to get a new hard drive or a completely new computer. ^_^ Of course, it would have been even nicer had my hard drive not died. :-P

Welcome back, btw. :-) I'm glad that you're up and running again, with all of your data intact and a better computer than before.

This was the first time I had a hard drive fail. It was almost 4 years old, and I probably just taxed it through over use.

I've long wanted to get a 1 terabyte external hard drive to back everything up. Maybe eventually.

Thank you, Malcolm! It's good to be back on my own computer.

Oddly enough, The Net is one of my favorite movies. It, and Hackers, are two of the films that inspired me to my current course of study at school. And you know...Sandra Bullock is hawt! LOL. Hope you're doing well, Derek.
