I've been seeing recs for vids screened at Vividcon for a few days now, and my absolute favorite has been American Tune, by greensilver. It's a West Wing vid set to Simon and Garfunkle, and not that I'm super insightful or anything, but I'll just reiterate the comment I left it:

Oh my god, this took my breath away and brought me close to tears. The song ( Read more... )

OMG WAIT DID I NEVER GO BACK TO LEAVE AN ACTUAL COMMENT ON YOUR ADAM/ZACH FIC? Wow, totally my bad, and will be remedied. Dude, I am so far into American Idol right now, it's sad.

I WILL READ IT. I'll probably hyperventilate from joy when you post it, actually, but then I'll calm down and read it.

WAIT IT'S NOT ANOTHER CROSSOVER IS IT? If it is, there's an actual chance of non-metaphoric hyperventilation. I'm going to need warning.

Here I am with my one Aaron Sorkin icon! Quite a bit more pensive than yours, though.

I did, but not as much as you did, I think - I admit I laughed at the exploding car, which I'm sure was important to the show's overall narrative but disrupted the feelings I think I was supposed to be having. I watched it while chatting with someone in AIM in another window, so I'll just reiterate what I said there:

The nature of certain works drawing in others more deeply than myself is, I know, in part due to their attachment to the sources of the work to begin with, and I can't be certain if in part it's due to how little I enjoy the feeling of nobody explaining anything or being emotional.

I think it's one of those "distillation" vids, rather than a "commentary" - and I already have emotional connection with the music, which helps. The vid doesn't say anything new, but says something old in a new way, which is admirable and enjoyable.

Your comments, as always, are far deeper and more insightful than mine :-) My enjoyment of this vid absolutely had to do with my emotional connection to the sources, you're right (both the show and the song). This was a montage of things I loved about the show, and made me nostalgic for watching it, for being in 12th grade again, and for traveling in the US, all at once. It's not as aesthetically/cinematographically impressive as your Sweet Charity vid (which is one of the best vids I've ever seen), but emotionally it resonated with me more. Not that this is any comparison, it was just the first vid I could think of :-)

I feel exactly the same way about that vid. (I mean, not exactly because I was never active in the fandom, but) so much beauty and emotion and nostalgia. It's wonderful.

Yup -- it's like having nostalgia for an administration that never even existed, it's amazing. I'm kind of glad this vid came out now, and not during the Bush years.
