"Any last requests?"
Colby considered telling Dwayne that he wished his life hadn't been saved back in that Humvee. But then an idea came to him. "You mind taking my ring off? I kinda promised my folks I wouldn't die with it on."
The man looked at Colby as though it may've been the strangest request he had ever heard, but wasn't one he minded obliging. "Sure," he said, twisting Colby's flesh-colored ring off - or trying to. "Anything else?" when the ring refused to budge.
"Yeah," Colby said. "Never smile at Mr. Crocodile," his grin broadening, toothy and pointed. The humanskin disguise melted away as Colby's natural look grew and grew. His parents, Ichy and Teryx had drilled into his thick skull that dinovolving - turning into the size and locomotion habits of one's form-ancestors - was a last-ditch measure, particularly in Colby's case.
The walls shuddered away as over a ton of Sarcosuchus imperator pressed against it. The ceiling was just a shoddy wall broken through easily enough.
I've got a long swim ahead of me, Colby thought to himself. And as he crawled over the side of the ship and into the warm Pacific sea, Colby mentally kicked himself as he realized something: If David and Don and the others don't find me being held prisoner, they'll still think I'm a spy.
So he sped away to a nice, quiet, empty part of the Pacific...and, with a nice, tempting pod of whales nearby, Colby floated in the water, and thought, weighing all his options.
