We make our own movies

Marisa and I are just (ish) back from the Hold Steady at Irving Plaza. People who rock: Craig, Michelle, Briana, Jeremy, Kate, Brian. People who suck: the fucking crowd-surfer who fucking kicked Craig in the face. Crowd-surfers fucking suck.

Here is my approximation of the setlist. I think I have all of the songs but as usual, the order in the middle will be off a little (sorry Kate!). I'll correct if I find it on the boards later.

EDIT: I corrected the order per the Unified Scene board.

Constructive Summer
Multitude of Casualties
The Swish
Magazines
Sequestered in Memphis
Party Pit
Massive Nights
Don't Let Me Explode
Stevie Nix
Barfruit Blues
Yeah Sapphire
Ask Her for Adderall
Sweet Payne
Most People are DJs
Lord, I'm Discouraged
Your Little Hoodrat Friend
Stay Positive
Slapped Actress
---
Stuck Between Stations
Chips Ahoy!
Killer Parties

For most of the set, I was thinking it was a well-paced set, balancing the hardest rockers with the mid-tempo stuff, and then they hit us with that encore. Come to think of it, "Hoodrat" followed by "Stay Positive" was pretty exhausting, too.

The set wasn't quite as eclectic as last time, but they did play like half of Almost Killed Me. Speaking of which, WTF is up with playing "Sweet Payne" unless they were trying to distract me from not really feeling "Barfruit Blues," in which case mission accomplished. Although: there is a cool riff toward the end of "Sweet Payne" that I usually miss because I always skip that song because it's not that good. I would've rather they tackled "Certain Songs" or "Knuckles" (or, dare to dream, "Hostile, Mass."), or for that matter "Banging Camp," but their loose, drawn-out version of "Most People are DJs" pretty much owned.

Verdict: Hold Steady show #10 a success. You know what I need to do? Shower.

the hold steady, rock shows
