There's just too many kids

Rob and Marisa and I and Kyla and Katie and Tim and Craig and Rayme and Ben and Lorraina were like the drums on "Lust for Life." The Hold Steady and the Drive-By Truckers played their second night at Terminal 5. The Drive-By Truckers went first. I have a couple of their albums, but I think they sounded better live, when they're a bit louder and more virtuosic. They are a real-deal country-rock band, aren't they? I say this as the type of indie kid who really likes "country" music like Neko Case, and I say this assuming that Neko Case probably likes a lot of legitimate country music, and assuming that 80% of her fans don't. Anyway, you can tell DBT are real country 'cause older dudes were there, sometimes without sleeves. The alternative part was that some people were also high. Marisa and Rayme saw a dude trying to eat his fist but I guess that was later. Anyway, the Drive-By Truckers were fine.

Then the Hold Steady came on and kicked ass and played one of the longer sets I've seen them do, with a bunch of B-sides and bonus tracks (though no "Stuck Between Stations" for the first time since I've been going to see them). Plus they fucking played "Most People are DJs" and I don't mean to be one of those dudes who is all about the oldest songs possible because "Stay Positive" was one of the best songs of the night too, but "Most People are DJs" ruled. The sound at Terminal 5 isn't great (it's super loud but not all that clear) but that's where the jumping and clapping comes in.

Approximate order of rock:

Constructive Summer
You Gotta Dance With You Came to the Dance With
Multitude of Casualties
Chips Ahoy!
One for the Cutters
Sequestered in Memphis
Cheyenne Sunrise
Ask Her for Adderall
Magazines
Arms and Hearts
Stevie Nix
Party Pit
Hornets! Hornets!
Massive Nights
Lord, I'm Discouraged
Your Little Hoodrat Friend
Most People are DJs
Slapped Actress
How a Resurrection Really Feels
---
First Night
Stay Positive
History Lesson Part 2 (Minutemen cover w/DBT)
Burning for You (BOC cover w/DBT)
Killer Parties

Then Marisa and Katie and Rob and Rayme and I found a pretty good diner on 9th Ave and had delicious food. Then Marisa and Rob and I drove back to Brooklyn in Rob's car, and driving in NYC briefly turned Rob into a nihilist.

the hold steady, rock shows
