about cropping, I open a 100x100 new document. Then I copy and paste the original pic on it and resize it as I like with the Transform>>Resize tool (I use Photoshop CS2). It's more convenient than just cropping the portion you want away because if you don't like the first crop you can move the pic around until you find what you want.
