Oh forfucksake, there goes another pair of breeks. An auld punk rocker's breeks-patching is never done. As if standing on the new scales I bought last week and discovering that I haven't lost so much as a single ounce wasn't bad enough news for one day!
I've found myself being a bit irritated lately by the misuse of inverted commas, in particular the use of quotation marks around words and phrases that are not direct quotations. Before I went ahead and made an arse of myself, I thought I should look up a few web-sites and check my facts, but having done so, the rules seem decidedly vague and contradictory. No wonder so many people have no idea how to use punctuation!
This page, for example, says that in UK English, single inverted commas are used for direct quotations. That is absolutely not what I was taught at school. My understanding has always been that double inverted commas are used for quotations, and single ones are used for titles, ironic emphasis, or quotes-within-quotes. Can anyone bring any clarity to this?
It is with not-considerable regret that I hereby announce that I have deemed it expedient to declare today to be a write-off. Persistent failure to get a bloody grip has been experienced, practically bugger-all has been accomplished, and I just want to get to my bed. *yawwwn* I think I'm going to head off for an early night.
