Cause and Effect - Robin Hood 3x02

Goodness, so so much to say about this, I don't know where to start! I'm sure I've forgotten something, but here's what I came up with so far...

1) Well, why not start at the beginning? It's interesting that we began with an illustration of what the outlaws do in their typical outlaw duties (want to see more of them in the rain, by the way!). This echoed the beginning of season 2 ('Sisterhood'), when the ambush on the Sheriff's sister at the start of the episode involved a multi-part speech detailing their motives and methods. It's nice recalling an old episode in that way, and also nice to see that their ethos hasn't changed, but rather become more intense.

2) It's a shame to see them making arrow-firing contraptions without Will being around though :( Do you think he made it before he left? And will we get to see him again? I do miss him!

3) But it has to be said that there's a new group dynamic in place, isn't there? And when Kate joins the gang, I think it will be quite well-rounded. I did like Kate, especially her attitude in wanting to save everybody rather than just Robin.

4) The scene where Kate's brother, Matthew died was sad, and I'm pleased to see Kate is good with the emotional stuff. But I'm surprised we didn't see Allan comforting her at all, considering that he's been through exactly the same thing in season 1. When he lost Tom, Djaq was there for him, telling him about her brother. I really thought Kate would get the same treatment - maybe in the future.

5) At least Kate got a big hug from Much anyway :D

6) And speaking of Much, his relationship with Allan remains interesting. They always seem to be together these days, don't they? But the bit where Allan teased Much for fancying Kate rather reminded me of his rivalry with Will over Djaq. A rivalry that, as I remember, was illustrated by an awful lot of Allan/Will slash - or maybe that had nothing to do with Djaq at all ;) I hope Much/Allan is different from Allan/Will though, because I don't want to see the same things playing out again.

7) And can I just say hooray for the return of Much's trusty and very beautiful shield?!

8) I notice there's not very much going on between Much and Robin though... I do hope we see a bit more of them together in the future, because I want to test my theory that Much has come on a lot emotionally.

9) Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Ireland mostly subdued by King John when he was... you know, king? The talk of Home Rule (effectively!) just struck me as an incey bit anachronistic. But I have no time for chasing up historical details today, I have too much work to do :(

10) In any case, I thought Finn was a good character.

11) Just a couple of gang-related thoughts before I move on to Guy. Firstly, I thought the bit where Much suggested storming the battlements and then was worried Tuck would take it seriously was brilliant. I love the idea of everyone being worried because Tuck is so gung-ho!

12) Something that's a little concerning is that John has had relatively little to do. This week, he got to say his 'We go to Nottingham' line again (yay!), and noticed that Kate was missing. But it's sad that when the issue of who would lead the gang in Robin's absence came up, nobody even gave John a second though. Back at the start, John leadership was unquestioned until Robin came along. What's changed? If Tuck's big personality is pushing John out, I don't think I'm happy about that. We really need to see them come to some sort of understanding, I think, as with the big guy in the episode with Queen Eleanor.

13) Now then, I'll tell you what's really concerning me: it's Guy. I'm really very worried about him. Anyone else? This week, he was clearly trying not to dwell on his demons, though I loved the scene where chained-up Robin taunted him about it and he lurked behind him with an especially disturbing darkness about him.

14) But we saw a distinct rupture between Guy and the Sheriff this week. Last week, Guy told the Sheriff he didn't like him very much, but at least there was still some fire between them. This week, he told him he wasn't scared of him, and it seemed as though they really weren't connecting any more. Now, I've always liked their relationship, sado-masochistic as I think it is, and I'm sorry it seems to be ending. But I'm more worried what will happen to Guy without the Sheriff's backing. We'll have to see how that plays out.

15) What really bothers me is the thought that Guy might not be in next week's episode. At the end of this week's, the Sheriff sent him to 'certain death', to explain to Prince John why they hadn't paid their special tax. Then in the trailer for next week, I couldn't make out any shots of Guy. I watched it twice, but couldn't see anything. Did anyone try to clear up this issue? I'd love to be reassured that he will be in it!

ETA:

16) OK, and THIS IS A FUTURE SPOILER but... I just found out the answer to 15 and let's just say it wasn't what I was hoping for. Waaaaaaa!

17) I thought that when the Sheriff handed Guy over, he looked a bit sad about it. Moment of regret, perhaps?

18) And how did I forget to mention one of the most awesome bits??? This being the bit where Much asks who Kate is, and Allan says it's some girl they rescued, and Kate says her name is Kate... and the look on Allan's face! I'd been waiting to see that since the preview last week :)
