5- Most hated literary characters

5. Fanny Price, Mansfield Park- Frankly, I found her "goodness" to be quite obnoxious.
4. Holden Caulfield, The Catcher in the Rye- Whiny, spoiled, and again, obnoxious.
3. Dolores Umbridge, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix- She gets off on torturing teenagers. I don't think she was written to be liked.

i was basically disgusted by everyone in wuthering heights. someone once complained to me about how anoying everyone was in the movie troy, how unjustified paris was, & waht a pussy he was, & how Achilies sort of seems spoiled & unlikeable. I pointed out this was actually one of the things the film got right, in terms of not glossifying the set aspect of the characters which is part of the crux concept of their being tragic. This person was a fan of Shakespeare so i pointed out how anoying he makes Romeo - how in the openeing of the play he is nearly suicidal over another love he is embroiled in. So naturally by the end he has actually impulsively snbuffed it over another woman. I think obviously S. doesn't put that in to deepen the character but to deepen the tragic quality & the untunable fate which is contained in the nature of him - as opposed to the modern tendency which would be to take that part out & make the play about tolerance or something - they do the same thing with othello, obviously - like Iago is just racist & it's ( ... )

I've never seen Troy and (embarrassingly), I'm not all that familiar with Shakespeare. We had to read Romeo and Juliet in school and I just never got into it. I guess I should probably give him another shot since my tastes have matured since then.

I actually did enjoy Wuthering Heights for its writing and the overall story, but yeah, Heathcliffe was a monster.
