I used to be part of the community 50bookchallenge (before they changed their posting rules) and I still try and aim for 50 every year. It just seems like a good, round number. In the years I've done it (for or five now, not counting this year), I've met the challenge twice. It's not that easy, if you have other hobbies and interests. I could probably do it every year, but I'd have to be really selective with the books I choose and I'd most likely have to give up literature, because it usually takes me longer than more contemporary novels.
I am sure I read that many books a year in my heavily reading years, but that dies out. There is a kind of a book reading prime of life, I think. I am sure I now read 50 books a year though, if you count recorded audio books. I got in the habit because I wanted to be able to read a book while I was on a walk or waiting in line at the supermarket, or working out or practicing classical guitar (which I do for a few hrs a day - another reason I watch so many movies
