It's only inappropriate when the honesty is one-way.

You need to have those kinds of talks with them when you're mostly yourself, mostly lucid. People don't know what to say/do, they're afraid. You can't spring honesty on them when they can see the gaping wound as clear as day. Clean up the blood, first, then give first aid lessons....

Yeah...um...my first reaction to a statement like that is, if one can't rely on one's friends to be there through thick and thin, then are they really people worth counting among your friends?

If they're really your friends, your honesty shouldn't scare them away. If they are scared away only temporarily, then maybe they only need time to try to understand. If, however, they continue to treat you in the same manner or get scared away for good, they probably weren't very good friends to begin with.
