A) Bad behavior. Mom should have at least reacted.

B) Maybe he has seen a movie or something recently where glass is not really glass, but a permeable block of jello or similar? Could be Airbender related?

but it is a good example of existentialism; he has chosen to act in a way incompatible with his surroundings, and so is doomed to failure if he sets concrete goals. If he instead chooses to do as much as he can, then the very investment in trying is a success.
