Perhaps that's so, but I for one applaud ringsnake's policies here. Would that more parents followed them.

this is true. Does rule #1 have anything to do with land wars in Asia?

Indeed.

(Technically, it'd cover not starting a land war in Asia as a specific example of the general rule, which is "Don't start a fight you can't win." I made the rule on my 18th birthday, in honour of the fact that I had reached the age of majority, and would now be subjected to felony charges for behaviour I'd indulged in freely only months earlier. If you punch the guy's lights out without a good legal pretext, and he calls the cops, you lose the fight. That was a lesson I learned in court.)
