Don't ask why, but I spent a large chunk of this morning watching various performances of "You Gotta Get a Gimmick" on You Tube.

Cabaret version after cabaret version -- the girls just don't get it. Even the bootleg filming of a 2003 Broadway performance was awful. Sweet voices don't work, especially for Mazeppa

I was just reading My Diva, not the greatest but some of the essays are interesting, and in it Wayne Koestenbaum writes of seeing the Metropolitan Opera production of Tschaikovsky's Mazeppa the day Anna Moffo died.

If you want to hear it sung well, listen to a recording with Debbie Shapiro Gravitte. I believe Debbie was in the revival with Tyne Daily .. or that she performed the number in Jerome Robbin's Broadway. Excellent!

I have to say ... These are the largest strippers I've ever seen in the show:) GYPSY is one of my all time favorites!

One suspects that the actual girls in a sleazy low-rent burlesque in the Midwest would be corn-fed, yes! These gals not only sound right, they look right. Yay!
