Don't ask why, but I spent a large chunk of this morning watching various performances of "You Gotta Get a Gimmick" on You Tube.

Cabaret version after cabaret version -- the girls just don't get it. Even the bootleg filming of a 2003 Broadway performance was awful. Sweet voices don't work, especially for Mazeppa

We did "Gypsy" my freshman year of college, in a school dominated by the music department.... you could even major in accordion!

Anyway, as a joke, a 5 foot tall voice major, who weighed about 220 tried out for Tessie, and got the part! She was FABULOUS! The other 2 were a non musicianm who learned the trumpet for the role, and couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, and a willowy thing, who had pushed for "Peter Pan" as the show of choice.

Her wiring came un-soldered one night, and she had a near melt-down, herself, onstage.
