I actually have the complete opposite reaction to the space combat aspects. I love it. It reminds me of the old Pirates interface, and I like that it isn't twitch based at all. It feels very strategic to me. I do understand where you're coming from as far as immersion, but my feeling is that in space combat you're essentially playing all of your staff as opposed to just giving orders.
Mind you, my original wish for the game was that running a ship would be more like a raid than a single player experience. One player would pilot, one would run weapons, one would be in engineering, etc...I still hope that at some point they find some way to work that kind of experience into the game. I think it would be really fun.
I don't mind playing my whole staff, but I think if that's going to be the mechanic, then it needs to be simplified. Shield directionality would be first on my list of things to remove. Auto shots would be something to put in. I sincerely doubt a Trek weapons officer has to press "go" every time the phasers fire. They're already computer controlled

Yeah, that was what Perpetual was supposedly going to do with it but Cryptic dropped that when they bought the rights. That's probably my biggest disappointment in the game. You can invite people on to your bridge but it's simply for RP purposes. There is no real functionality that lets you feel like you're on the bridge of your own ship, and that's something I really wanted out of it.
Really. That's pretty sad that it just has an RP effect and nothing else.
I'll keep playing through the beta...my guild doesn't offer raid times I can make, so my desire to keep emblem grinding is a bit low right now...so I'm willing to put time into playing it. Maybe I'll warm to the ship combat. The game does seem kinda broken by design to me, though, and what you just mentioned here doesn't help that impression.
Aion's DirectX based and it's gorgeous. Just sayin'. Then again, it's off the Crysis engine, so....
In other news, thanks for the review. Being a longtime Trekker, I've eagerly awaited this game (almost as long as for Aion), and I'm glad to know your impressions. I doubt I'll invest too much time in this game, though if I had a trial, that might help matters a bit.
Yeah...I probably should explain myself better there. My suspicion, as an engineer, isn't that DirectX is inherently bad but that it lets you lay back and let DirectX do a lot of the work for you. If you do that, you end up with weaker results.
How have you liked Aion?
I'm sure they'll be dropping free trials soon, or you might be able to find a beta key still around.
Well, it's certainly sexy, I'll give it that. My experiences are... a little mixed. On the one hand, I like the crafting system and appreciate that one can craft really good gear if they put the time into it. And by that, I mean it's not all that much time to 399 your skill, though it will require a little bit of gold kinah. (Crafting Expert stuff requires passing the Expert crafting exam, which requires... some sizeable investment of resources, however. Which I like, actually.) Crafting your own weapons and seeing them better than most everyone else's is really a nice feeling. Plus, you can craft potions, manastones, and other helpful items

As a follow-up, it's not a wonder that my legion is known as the crafting legion. (Seriously.) We do the most fun things the most often. ^_^ PvP is fun if we're together in a small team, but solo, PvP is ... what's the antithesis of fun?
Fortress raids so far are a little weird -- since so many people are attacking and defending, it's really really hard not to suffer server lag. That needs to be improved. Also, combat with like, 200 vs 200, like you'd see in a Fortress Raid? The game needs better ways of organizing. Alternately, players could probably come up with their own ways (like what we did for CoX Hami raids)... hmmm.

I mean, most sports are just running with decorations. Doesn't make them less fun to play.
