Gwenog nodded as the young man babbled at her, trying to keep her eyes from glazing over. She was saved when she spotted Morgan, excusing herself to run over to her little brother
( ... )
Oliver spotted Jones heading in his direction and straightened up in his chair. "Nice game, Jones. I'm glad you could play today. The fans were happy to see you, you know." While Oliver hadn't always gotten along with Gwenog, he really didn't hold anything against her. She was just rather...brash for his tastes. And that was saying something.
"Thanks, Wood," Gwenog said, momentarily taken back by his rather polite and friendly greeting. Gryffindor, she reminded herself. "You did a bang-up job getting this whole thing together."
She sat down next to him and scrutinized him carefully. "How do you reckon you'll bring the Cup back to England? I mean, besides the finances. England hosted the cup not that long ago, and it didn't exactly go off very well. I can't see the International Committee being easily swayed by the charms of an ex-Keeper. No offense," she added with a slight smile.
Oliver shook his head. "It's not about getting here, it's about getting it to happen at all. All the games and sports departments are working together to get it off the ground- there's just not a lot of funding right now for this sort of thing. Every knut's going into reorganization, rebuilding, education..." He shrugged. "We've got portkeys; the actual game doesn't have to be here."
Sure, everyone wanted it to be in England, but Jones had a point- it hadn't exactly gone well the last time.
Minerva had enjoyed herself very much. Even her sister Fortuna had a good time, although she spent most of her time reliving every match she'd seen the Pride of Portree play in the last half century instead of watching the exhibition. That was her sister's way.
She left Fortuna gossiping with some other silly tea-leaf reading witches who were busy turning their all-seeing eyes on the future of the World Cup, and made her way over to congratulate Oliver Wood on a job well done.
It had been a great day so far. Roger had been glad to recieve an owl from Roger this week -- this was just the kind of thing he'd wanted to sink his teeth into. Besides, it'd been too long since he'd been to a decent Quidditch match. Made him miss the game, quite a lot. Ollie looked
After the match was over, he made a beeline for some food, looking forward to running into some people he knew. He caught a glimpse of Ollie milling about -- he seemed a hell of a lot more relaxed and confident now that everything was going well. The guy'd looked so anxious all day, Roger had been tempted to hunt up some whiskey to help calm his nerves.
Oliver spotted Roger getting some food and hopped out of his chair. "Hey there. Thanks again for all your help today, Roger. I don't think we could have pulled this off without you." He clapped the other bloke on the back and grinned thankfully at him.
The little chicken things were pretty good, Roger thought as he plucked another one off the plate. Oliver came over as he stuffed it into his mouth. "Mmm," he said in a muffled greeting before he swallowed. "Hey, mate. And don't thank me; I've been wanting to do something like this for ages. Besides, this was all mostly you. Great game, yeah?"
"Yeah, it was a perfect ending, too. Couldn't have been better had I planned it out ahead of time." Oliver glanced down at the food. "Pretty good, yeah?" he asked, already knowing the answer.
One of his favorite bits of preparation had been to taste test all the food himself prior to letting the planners make final decisions.
The game had been excellent, and Ginny was so thankful that Oliver had been kind enough to owl her a ticket. She could feel the excitement of the game still coursing through her system; she couldn't stop smiling.
Now that the game was over, she hoped to find Oliver and thank him in person--plus she just wanted to see him. Even though she shouldn't, she had missed him. He'd been so busy recently, and she hadn't wanted to owl him--she knew he had plenty to do other than read owls from her, so she hoped to find him milling around somewhere.
Oliver saw Ginny and grinned, jogging over to greet her. "Ginny, hey. Did you enjoy the game?" he asked eagerly. He was pleased she'd been able to come, especially since she'd listened to him talk about it for so long now. Plus, it was good to have friends around.
Ginny had been looking through the crowd of people for Oliver with no luck. She frowned and turned around in a circle, and suddenly Oliver was heading toward her. Her smile returned, and when he was close enough she threw her arms around him in a tight but short hug.
"Hey you!" she said as she pulled away but left a hand on his arm. "This was fantastic! I'm so proud of you, and thank you you so much for the ticket. It was an excellent game--I haven't had this much fun in ages." She grinned at him. "You must be so pleased. You've worked so hard on this, and," she spread her arms open wide, "look at all these supporters."
He chuckled and squeezed her back. "It went well, yeah. I'm just happy we didn't have any problems, and that people seemed to have fun."
"You had fun, then?" he asked, liking the way she seemed so excited by the event. This is what he was going for- getting people excited about Quidditch again was what the league, and then the Cup, needed.
Angelina hadn't wanted to leave her flat--not other than to work that is--but Cho had asked her if she was going to the fundraiser. Angelina had been conflicted because she didn't feel like socializing, but she wanted to support Oliver.
She and Cho had gone to the game together, and surprisingly she had enjoyed herself. The game had been amazing, and she couldn't wait to find Oliver to congratulate him on such an amazing job.
After the game, Cho went off to see someone, and they had decided to meet up in a little while. In the meantime, Angelina wandered around, grabbed a bite to eat, and tried not to think of Lukas and their painful goodbye.
Cho was still keyed up after watching the Quidditch game. It had been an exciting match and she thought it had been a great idea for a fundraiser. It was no doubt going to be a successful one with the number in attendance and the crowd's enthusiasm.
After she said hello to a few people, she made her way back to find Angelina. Cho was glad Ang had decided to come today. It had been a rough week for her, and Cho hoped a fun event such as this Quidditch game would be good for Ang.
She soon caught up with Angelina, "Hey, can you believe this crowd?" She smiled, "It's a good day to be a Quidditch fan."
Angelina turned around when she heard Cho's voice. She smiled at her. "It's brilliant," she agreed. "I'm so proud of Oliver. I'm hoping to find him, but with all the people, I don't know if we'll be able to even spot him."
She held out a plate of chips. "Want any? I realized I haven't eat all day, so I bought something. I can't eat them all though. We can get drinks if you like."
She agreed, "Oliver has done a wonderful job with this. It's good to know we have someone like him in Magical Games working to promote Quidditch."
When Angelina offered some of her chips, Cho gladly accepted. "Thanks, all the lovely aromas have been tempting me." She had noticed Angelina's lack of appetite this week but was glad she trying to eat something. She took a bite of a chip and looked around the food area. "Sure, let me get the drinks. What would you like?"
