Lavender shifted onto her side, quite unable to stop the silly smile on her face. Judging by light peeking around the edge of the curtains, it was quite late in the morning. She never slept in this late, not anymore, anyway. These days she was far more likely to wake up at five or six, though she suspected it was much later than that.
She hadn’t gone to bed particularly early, either, biting her lip as she looked over at the reason why. Lavender frowned to herself. Merlin, she bet she looked a mess. Her hair was bound to be a disaster and what about her breath…?
Lavender twisted over to get out of bed and perhaps pop to the bathroom before James woke up and freshen herself up a bit. Really, she needed a shower, but this was the first time they’d done anything like this and really wasn’t sure what the etiquette was. It would be rude just to go and have a shower, wouldn’t it? She could at least brush her teeth and hair.
Then again, he’d never believe that she woke up with minty fresh breath.
A warm hand slid over her bare hip and Lavender held her breath. Urgh. He was going to be totally put-off by her just-woken-up (and possibly slightly debauched) state; she’d utterly fallen apart under his touches last night, even surprising herself. Apparently her libido had only gone on a temporary leave of absence the last few months.
“Happy birthday, gorgeous,” he murmured, encouraging her back towards him. Lavender shivered slightly, shifting back into his embrace with a slightly embarrassed smile.
Bloody hell, there were scratch marks on his shoulder. She hadn’t realised she’d been that rough.
“Hi,” she breathed. “Thank you.” Circe, he had gorgeous eyes. She thought she might very well get lost in them. There was glitter in his eyelashes, too, from the balloon that had exploded over them at some point last night at Utopia; she suspected that her hair was full of the stuff and that it was now all over the pillows. Actually, that thought made her smile a bit.
James stretched beside her, feet knocking hers and his hand sliding up her ribs. “Did you enjoy yourself last night?” His lips pressed gently to her forehead.
Lavender sighed softly. She thought the party had gone very well, though she knew Lisa had been a bit off at one point. It gave her a nice, warm sort of glow thinking about it and perhaps even gave her the confidence to reach out to more people to try and socialise with them. Inviting lots of people to a party was one thing, but doing things more personally was still a touch daunting.
“I had a great time.”
The look her gave her now was a bit more of a leer. “And after the party?”
Laughing, Lavender wrapped an arm around him. “Every minute,” she murmured, kissing him and mindless of morning breath.
“Glad to hear it.” His fingers stroked her hair from her face. What the hell had happened to his plan to come over here and work not let anything get in the way of his research? Very few things got him out of his studies when he set his mind to them. He’d had a girl dance into his line of sight at a benefit and it had thrown him off a bit. But in a good way. “You deserve it.” He paused. “Got any plans for today?”
Lavender stopped her hands from wandering under the covers too much. “No, not really. Dinner with my parents tonight.”
“Both of them?”
“Yeah. Should be interesting.” Especially as the divorce was nearly finalised. “Do you…” Lavender hesitated. “Do you want to come?”
“Really?”
She nodded. “Please? I’d like it if you did.” But was that too much? God, it was too much. She was making a fool out of herself for asking, wasn’t she?
“Yeah. If you want me to.” His fingers trailed her jaw, over the scars on her cheek. They’d fascinated him from the moment he’d seen them. “But only if you spend the rest of the day with me.”
Her chest felt a little tight with excitement and she moved nearer, pressing closer to his body. “Sounds like a fair deal to me,” she whispered and surrendered to another kiss.
