Harry glanced at Ron and then back at his pocket watch as they stood in training room #1 with the other trainees. Ernie and Michael were both here was well, but so far, no one had come in to receive them, direct them, tell them what was next. Had he got the time wrong? Had all fifteen of them impossibly got either the time or the room wrong?

He frowned. Ron seemed as clueless as he felt. He just hoped that whatever the mistake was, it hadn't happened on their end. Auror Robards had made it clear that they were to be on time.

Suddenly, the door opened, and a heavily muscled man who was as bald as Kingsley came in, looking as if he were in a really bad mood. Clearly he didn't have Kingsley's temperament. He walked to the front of the room, stopping in front of the chalkboard, and stood there with clipboard in hand and one hand behind his back.

After looking at them for what seemed like ages, holding each of their gazes, he bellowed at them to form a line. Almost comically, they all hesitated a moment.

"Was I not clear? Do I need to ( ... )

When he arrived with Harry at training room #1, Ron looked around at the other trainees who'd gathered in the room. He knew Macmillan and Corner, of course, but didn't recognise any of the others. Stuffing his hands in the pockets of his work robes, Ron wondered if the other trainees felt anxious too.

He didn't have long to think on that; a big man who almost could have been Kingsley Shacklebolt's brother came in, scowling as he made his way to the front of the training room. When he ordered them to form a queue, the recruits looked a little stupefied. The man yelled at them again and the recruits lined up in no order Ron could determine, though he was glad that Harry had chosen to stand next to him.

Ernie almost knocked into a couple of people as they all rushed to line up. He stood straight and put his hands behind his back and hoped that's what the Minister wanted. It was his first ever meeting with Kingsley Shacklebolt, but his heart was beating so fast and so loud in his chest now, he thought it might be his last.

Ernie unconsciously held his breath and waited.

Spence eyed the group again as they scrambled to line up, then nodded. "Right," he began to walk up and down the line. "My name--" he flicked his wand toward the chalkboard, where his name appeared in bold chalk letters -- "is Auror Spencer. You will hear my friends and colleagues here in the department call me Spence, but let me make one thing clear: We?" He wagged a finger between himself and the group. "Are not friends. You are not my colleagues. You are first-year rookies, and right now, a full-blown doxy infestation is more useful to this department than you tossers. You will address me as Auror Spencer, and only as Auror Spencer, unless you are calling me 'Sir'. I'm going to call out your names. You want credit for being here? You answer 'Present, Auror Spencer' or 'Present, Sir'; do I make myself clear ( ... )

"Er," Harry nearly stuck his hand in the air, but it felt silly outside of Hogwarts. The look on Spencer's face when he noticed had Harry considering feigning a cough and acting like he hadn't said anything. But he plowed ahead.

"Is there going to be much practical training?" he asked, clearing his throat. "I mean, apart from the classes and such." He didn't want to be stuck in a classroom for the foreseeable future; he wanted to do something, even if it was just practice.

Spence was across the room like a shot, getting right in Potter's face. "Are you forgetting something, Potter? Something like who you're talking to?"

Harry stood up straighter when Spencer got into his face, standing entirely too close in his opinion. He fought off the urge to step back, his brows contracting when Spencer yelled in his face. "I -- er, Sir?"

Shaking his head slightly, he added, "Sir, are we going to be doing any practical training?"

Michael quickly got into line when Auror Spencer yelled at them to do so. He had decided to keep his mouth shut, speak only when spoken to, and generally stay out of everyone's way today.

He knew that training was going to be tough, and there would be yelling and sweating and stress. He'd worked hard already though, and that was only the beginning.

He listened as Auror Spencer yelled at Harry and ordered him to do push-ups. He was very glad his name was NotPotterorWeasley. He kept his eyes forward and waited to see what would happen next.

Well damn, this was the quietest group Spence had ever had. There were some mumbles, but for the most part, no one was speaking up. Not that he was totally surprised that they were intimidated, but they damn well shouldn't be. Hell, some of these kids had done some real fighting, he knew, and now they couldn't speak up in a classroom ( ... )

Ernie looked over at Michael, who was being called upon as the group's first guinea pig. He knew Michael had the stones, so he shot him a sideways glance of encouragement and gave a slight nod.

Michael stepped forward without hesitating. He wasn't scared. They wouldn't actually hurt them, he reckoned. At least not on the first day.

"Yes, Sir!" He steeled himself to see what would happen next.
