That had not gone well. Katie knew she'd forgotten things, important things that she should have known. She was tired and tense and she still had the practical in the afternoon to get to. She was debating whether or not to go home for lunch when she felt an arm slip around her waist and a welcome voice in her ear.
"Hey," she said softly, leaning back against him. "That's the best idea I've heard in a long time." She kissed him gently at the base of his neck. "Missed you."
"Missed you, too," he said, smiling down at her. He moved so that he could pull her completely into his arms and ran a hand across her cheek. She looked as exhausted as he felt. Not really in the lines of her face, but something in her eyes. He kissed her gently. "Tired? Nothing a little food and good company can't cure, I hope?"
The walk was cold, and snowflakes annoyingly kept landing on his eyelashes, but it was hard not to enjoy it anyway with Katie pressed against his side. They were relatively silent, but it was pleasant nonetheless. Still, he couldn't say the warm of the Hog's Head wasn't welcome. There was a decent lunch crowd, but they were still able to find a decent table back away from the cold rush of air that came in every time the door opened.
"Is it next Wednesday yet?" Dean said, laughing a little as he stripped off his winter cloak and got settled at the table. "Half an exam down and I'm already 'nastily exhausted.'"
Katie smiled against his lips as he kissed her, and nodded. "Tired. And I think I messed it up pretty royally. So hot food and good company will help me regroup for the practical," Katie said gratefully.
Once they reached the Hog's Head, Katie took off her cloak and slid onto the bench beside Dean, snuggling into his side. "I know. And I've had one more than you. Still got Herbology tomorrow. But I'm not so worried about that. Neville helped me out a lot. I think I'll do okay," she said. "Fish is supposed to be brain food, but does it count when it's fish n' chips? Or is it supposed to be proper fish, not all fried and battered?"
He rubbed her arm soothingly. "I'm sure it's not so bad as you think. Besides, I've seen you at the wand with these spells. I know you'll do fine on the practical."
As Katie snuggled in next to him, Dean found his arm went naturally around her. They'd not really had public dates before, other than the two parties they'd attended together, and he decided he liked being out with her. It felt different than just lounging in one of their houses. More official, if he was allowed to think that. "Don't remind me. I think I'll do all right at Herbology, I guess, but it's definitely not my best."
"I think anything we eat right now will be brain food," he said, thinking that the fish and chips sounded really good. "I think just being able to take a few minutes outside of the school will do a lot to recharge us." He gave her a little squeeze. "And being here with you will do the rest."
He ate the last of his chips, then took another from her plate, grinning. "Who said you weren't supposed to see it?"
Dean relished the short kiss. "But not too manly. I am the artistic type, after all." Their time was winding down faster than he wanted, but neither of them could afford to miss the practical portion of their exam. He wrapped one arm around her waist, and watched her eating. "Maybe we can just walk home together after the exam Monday, then? I'll take care of dinner."
"Hrumph," Katie said, and moved her plate further away. "I need my chips too. I know you need more meat on your bones, but that's no excuse." Katie sighed and relented with the look he gave her. "Fine!" She said, pushing the plate back between them. "But you take my last chip and you are a dead man."
"Okay. So you're manly, but with a tortured soul? I'll try my best." Katie ate her fish, enjoying the slight movement of his fingers on her waist. She really wished they had more time.
"That sounds great," she said, wondering he'd make shepherd's pie or something different. She didn't particularly care. She'd need to think of something really good to get him, though.
She finished off her fish and shared the last of her chips with Dean. "We should really head back," she said glumly.
He caught her hand playfully as she slid the plate away from him, forcing her to slide it back his direction. Pretending to be offended, he said, "A gentleman would never steal his girl's last chip."
"It's going to be great. Maybe not the smoothest Valentine's Day that I could manage, but I think with the extenuating circumstances...."
Dean grabbed another bit of food from her plate, smiling happily until she mentioned heading back. He sighed, knowing that she was right, then snuggled his head into her shoulder. "Just five more minutes, Mum."
Katie rolled her eyes at him and continued eating.
"I don't care about it being smooth," Katie said, "really. We'll have a great time, no matter what. Remember when I got all upset about that stupid paella?" She kissed him gently on the cheek. "Just need the two of us."
Katie grimaced. "Don't say that, Dean. It makes all the naughty things I think about you seem horribly wrong."
