He ate the last of his chips, then took another from her plate, grinning. "Who said you weren't supposed to see it?"
Dean relished the short kiss. "But not too manly. I am the artistic type, after all." Their time was winding down faster than he wanted, but neither of them could afford to miss the practical portion of their exam. He wrapped one arm around her waist, and watched her eating. "Maybe we can just walk home together after the exam Monday, then? I'll take care of dinner."
"Hrumph," Katie said, and moved her plate further away. "I need my chips too. I know you need more meat on your bones, but that's no excuse." Katie sighed and relented with the look he gave her. "Fine!" She said, pushing the plate back between them. "But you take my last chip and you are a dead man."
"Okay. So you're manly, but with a tortured soul? I'll try my best." Katie ate her fish, enjoying the slight movement of his fingers on her waist. She really wished they had more time.
"That sounds great," she said, wondering he'd make shepherd's pie or something different. She didn't particularly care. She'd need to think of something really good to get him, though.
She finished off her fish and shared the last of her chips with Dean. "We should really head back," she said glumly.
He caught her hand playfully as she slid the plate away from him, forcing her to slide it back his direction. Pretending to be offended, he said, "A gentleman would never steal his girl's last chip."
"It's going to be great. Maybe not the smoothest Valentine's Day that I could manage, but I think with the extenuating circumstances...."
Dean grabbed another bit of food from her plate, smiling happily until she mentioned heading back. He sighed, knowing that she was right, then snuggled his head into her shoulder. "Just five more minutes, Mum."
Katie rolled her eyes at him and continued eating.
"I don't care about it being smooth," Katie said, "really. We'll have a great time, no matter what. Remember when I got all upset about that stupid paella?" She kissed him gently on the cheek. "Just need the two of us."
Katie grimaced. "Don't say that, Dean. It makes all the naughty things I think about you seem horribly wrong."
At that comment, he pulled her just a little closer. "Well, one of these days, I promise a proper date with all the fanfare, just to show you I can do it. Till then, I agree, and I'm glad that this is enough."
Dean grinned and snuggled in tighter so that he could sneak a little kiss onto the side of her neck. And then one on her temple as he leaned in to say, "Naughty things, eh? And just what have you been thinking about, Miss Bell, that would be improper for our Mums to hear?"
He pulled out enough money for both their meals and left it on the table, reluctantly standing and offering her a hand. "Practical awaits." He smiled softly. "May I escort you back to the castle, milady?"
"Alright. Will you wear a tux on this fanfare date, perchance?" Katie grinned.
She flushed and tried to ignore the feeling of his lips on her neck. "I thought we were trying exhibit control. Besides, we have our practical in twenty minutes or so. I don't think we'll be able to concentrate if I start telling you what I've fantasized about us doing together."
Dean paid before she could object and she stood, taking his hand. "Of course, kind sir."
Dean thought for a moment. "Well, I do have that fancy affair from the Autumn Ball tucked away somewhere. It would have to be an awfully special occasion to warrant it, though. I try to avoid ties whenever I can."
"Spoilsport," he said, leaving one last lingering kiss on her jawline before pulling away. "Perhaps another time, then."
He wound their fingers together and led the way out of the building and back into the February chill and snow. They still had a few minutes to get back, long enough that he kept their pace leisurely. The cold might catch up to them before long, but he wanted to enjoy their last bit of time together, clear his head before they joined the queue for the practical. She'd be going in at the beginning of the alphabet, and he not until the end, so he had to get his fill now.
"Do you think you'll miss it?" Dean asked as they approached the front gates. He nodded toward the castle looming ahead. "I've become accustomed to our limited access, but I'm wondering if it will hit much harder when we're done completely
"As I can recall, you cut a handsome figure that night," Katie said fondly. "I'd like to see you wear that again."
"Definitely," she murmured, trying not to think about Dean naked. Naked Dean would not help her pass her Defense practical. Naked Dean could wait until after NEWTs.
She walked back up to the castle with him, their fingers interlaced and she rubbed her thumb along his hand. "Definitely. It's strange now, after last year and the battle. But it's been home for so long, such a big part of our lives. It's going to be weird not being able to go back."
"Well, maybe sometime in the coming months we can come up with a good reason to dress up, then." Dancing with her at the ball had been the start of what had brought them together, he remembered. Indirectly, at least. Maybe that suit was good luck or some such nonsense.
Katie's single word response definitely piqued his interest, but he decided it was probably best not to ask. He neither needed that sort of information on his brain at the moment, nor did he want to be in public when he found it out. Perhaps he'd ask her again Wednesday night after they had finished their exams.
He nodded, squeezing her hand a little tighter as they walked. "Maybe in a few years I'll be teaching art seminars, and you can be a guest speaker from the International Association of Quidditch. We can't have seen the last of the place, even if we're moving on for now. Worked too hard to keep the place standing, you know?"
"I'm sure we can. Someone will get married or throw a posh party. I'd like to wear that green dress again. You painted me so nicely in it," she said with a smile.
"Yes. McGonagall won't get rid of us that easily," Katie agreed. They were nearing the castle and Katie tugged Dean behind a rather large bush. "Need to give you a good luck kiss, but I don't want McGonagall kicking my arse," she said before leaning up to press their lips together.
Dean was taken by surprise when Katie pulled him behind a bush on the way up to castle, but he recovered pretty quickly as he ducked his head down into the kiss. This was not the fiery, yet-still-aware-of-their-surroundings kiss of being in public, but the fiery, Merlin-it's-been-too-long kiss that he'd been wanting all day. His hand came up to the back of her neck, but he resisted to urge to pull out her ponytail, instead caressing the skin there. Putting his other arm around her, he pulled her as close as he could, just enjoying having her there.
Katie sighed against Dean's mouth as he caressed the back of her neck. She pulled his bottom lip between her teeth and tugged on it gently. She slid her tongue across his lip and was pulling him even closer when she heard a meow. She turned and saw Mrs. Norris looking up at them. "Can it be Wednesday night yet?" she said, burying her face in Dean's chest.
The kiss had just begun to reach its ideal intensity, with Katie's tongue teasing his lips into doing her bidding, when she pulled away. Dean glanced the same direction and groaned, wrapping his arms around her as she snuggled against him. "There's something I won't be missing about school," he said gruffly.
He leaned in for one more lingering kiss--what could Mrs. Norris do at that point, really?--before puling away to an "appropriate" distance. "I guess that's a signal we should get back now." Winding their hands together once again, he added, "Thanks for lunch, Kate. I think it's just what I needed."
"Bloody Filch and his sodding cat. Should've stayed petrified," Katie grumbled.
Dean kissed her and she stroked his cheek with her hand. "I guess so," she said reluctantly. "No, thank you. It was a brilliant idea and a really nice break." They reached the steps and started to walk up them. "I'll see you on Monday. Well, I'll see you tomorrow, but you know what I mean."
"Monday seems really far away," he replied. Normally, he might have bounded up the stairs two at a time, but today he wasn't particularly anxious to get to his destination. He laughed. "Then again, that could just be the impending NEWT doom talking."
There was a small chamber next to the Great Hall where all the students had congregated to await their names being called, and they entered still hand in hand. There were people talking, but overall the atmosphere was a little tense. They stood in pleasant silence until Professor Diggle stepped out a few minutes later and called a few names, Katie's among them.
