Everything was finally ready; he and his house elf had been working very hard all afternoon to get things set up; the table made, the house warm, the table set, the curtains drawn to make it seem warmer inside now it was dark. The house was very open plan - apart from the kitchen, there was only one room in the ground floor; a dining table that had been enlarged to handle more guests and a comfortable area around the fire with a pair of sofas and four sitting room chairs. Everything was in dark red velvet and cotton, and rich red walnut furnishings, and the floor, apart from a few similar coloured imported rugs, was covered in dark red glaze tiles.
He was waiting now for people to arrive, the rugs moved in front of the fire to make a soft landing as people arrived. It was going to be an interesting evening, he hoped - he'd set up the video machine in the other room to play one of Jacqueline's favourite films, with the volume most of the way down. It'd be background noise, and interesting, no doubt, to some of his visitors - a talking point. He hoped things would go well, it wasn't every day that you turned fifty.
