Daphne was lying awake in bed. She hadn't been able to sleep much since that fateful night almost a week prior. Had it really been a week? She had to stop and count the days out.

Daphne was lying flat on her back, staring up at the ceiling of the Capper's guest room. She pulled the blankets up under her chin, thankful for the physical warmth they provided. Daphne had had to perform a warming charm on them because, even in the house with blankets over her, there was a cold that Daphne couldn't shake. Her bones felt achy and her throat was dry. And then it hit her and she started to sob. Daphne shook and almost choked, sputtering, snot dripping from her nose. She pulled a handkerchief from the nightstand and wiped her face, careful not to upset the bedclothes too much.

She sat herself up in bed and looked out the window. It was gray and raining. And the outside of the window matched what Daphne felt on the inside. When she saw the sky light up in the distance, she counted the seconds until she heard thunder. Somehow this calmed her. As if even Mother Nature was disagreeable, trying to heal herself after so much damage.

Daphne stared out the window, wiping her eyes, still breathing heavily. She felt so completely alone. She still had not heard from her parents, though was sure that by now her parents should have at least attempted to contact her. And Julian, her brother... what had happened to him? She hadn't heard anything from him in over a month. That was unlike him. Usually he and Daphne corresponded weekly.

Pulling her knees up to her chin and the blankets up around her, Daphne closed her eyes. When she opened them, she could barely feel the wetness falling from her eyes, over her cheeks, falling onto the blankets over her knees. She was so alone. Never had she felt so terrified.

Her parents had never been unkind, nor had they ever showed any signs of cruelty towards others, but they had always been accustomed to a certain status and a certain amount of wealth. Their Blood Supremacy ran deep, however, and they had always known that they were a cut above Muggleborns and Mudbloods. The entire family was known for their hospitality and manners. The Greengrass name was famous for eloquence and propriety, which had been taught to Jules and Daphne from a very early age. They had been taught to keep composure, use manners and wit, and to be courteous to others because that would get them where they were going in life.

But her parents had supported Voldemort. They had looked up to him as a source of creating and means of amassing a wealth of power and money. And when her Caroline's health and magical abilities started to fail, the supporters of Voldemort had given what they had to in order to help her parents - not willingly, Daphne assumed, but rather because their leader had made it apparent they would be rewarded for making his resources stronger and more reliable.

There was very little Daphne actually knew about her parents' involvement with Voldemort and his followers. Though they hadn't been sworn on as Death Eaters, they certainly had not stood idly by. It was all Daphne could have done to keep from choosing sides.

And now, here she was, feeling guilty for her disloyalty to her parents. And feeling still more guilt for not having tried to protect those places and people most important to her, as well. Daphne was angry with herself as much as with her parents and with Jules. She just had no idea where to go from here.
