Elliott Peadcott, from Human Relations, had a nice speaking voice. He had been giving the interns their orientation for the last two hours, and Andy was struck at how well he made such a dull subject interesting. When she had been hired by the Ministry, the orientation had been conducted by a woman who spoke through her nose and somehow managed to make even that tone monotone. But Peadcott had been a good choice. The students appeared to be listening and paying attention, so they were either serious about this opportunity or good actors.
The morning’s program had gone well. The students who were attending the first meeting had all arrived on time, which was good because she had left the Atrium with them right at eight and anyone who was not there would have had to wait for the afternoon meeting. After she had collected them, they had been taken in groups from the Atrium to the large conference room on Level Five, which had enough seating for everyone to be comfortable and see the front of the room.
Her portion of the program had been run through easily, along with introductions to the representatives of each department. Peadcott had started then, giving a thorough orientation to the Ministry of Magic, from the policies that everyone must follow to a general overview of where things were located and what areas would not be accessible by interns. She had spoken with him the other day and was pleased to hear that his section on harassment included not only gender based and anti-Muggleborn sentiment but also anti-Pureblood for those who might have family or a House that others disliked.
She was very pro-Muggleborn acceptance, but she had also seen how her nephew was treated by adults who ought to know better and this group was still children, regardless of their age and brave actions. Anyone accepted into the internship program had passed through several rounds of thorough examination, whether they were aware of it or not, so she didn’t want to see disrespect to any participant. If she did, they’d be removed from the program and finding future employment with the Ministry of Magic would be impossible.
When Peadcott finished answering any questions, she stood up and took over once again. It had only taken two and a half hours, which gave them plenty of time to find out their departmental assignment and complete the Ministry paperwork. She looked out over the faces and nodded once before she smiled. “That completes this portion of your orientation. Now, you will learn the department to which you’ve been assigned and receive the necessary paperwork for that area. If you are assigned to specific departments within the Ministry, you will be asked to complete a more thorough paperwork package as well as accept and security clearance requirements necessary.”
“If you will please go to the table to my right, Mr. Peadcott will give you your assignment. You will then go to the appropriate representative from each department to get your necessary paperwork. If you have any general questions for the representatives, you are free to ask them at that time, but please do respect your fellow interns and allow them an opportunity to get their paperwork.”
“Feel free to get more juice, water or coffee while you are completing the paperwork and talking amongst yourselves.“ She glanced at the clock. “All paperwork must be complete before you leave the conference room. Once you’ve finished filling everything out, please fold it and tap it once with your wand; a privacy seal will activate. My junior assistant, Mr. Malfoy, is seated at the back table, and he will collect all of the paperwork for me. I am the only one who can remove the seal, so rest assured that no one can steal the paperwork and learn personal details about you.”
“Please be sure to indicate on the paperwork what date you will be able to begin work. We will have a representative of the department meet you in the Atrium for your first day, so that your employee clearance can be arranged. Please note that we are aware that the schedules for the next few weeks will be varied, and we have no issue with students who wish to work longer hours for the experience before your classes start. After school does begin, we will restrict interns to a maximum of twenty-five hours a week. We do not want anyone‘s studies to suffer due to this program, after all. The minimum amount of hours expected from any intern is fifteen.”
“Thank you for applying to the Ministry of Magic’s Student Internship Program. Congratulations on your acceptance and welcome to the Ministry.”
