"Textbooks aren't even assigned yet, Hermione," Ron said quietly, a little smirk on his face. He'd been watching her for a minute or so, her dark head bent over what he saw was a Potions book. She'd been flipping back and forth from a place in the index to various pages, clearly intent on starting work for the NEWT courses early. The house was quiet, though there were birds taking up new residence under one of the eaves outside. "You can't be studying yet, not seriously?"
He moved to sit in an armchair opposite her, looking at the little stack of texts she'd piled on the desk. Most of them were Potions, Ron's least favourite subject, and he didn't want to get roped into studying in advance after having a whole year off from brewing them. Her face was a little paler than usual, and Ron held back a frown.
Yes, he'd been avoiding her. It was a little stupid, probably, but he felt like a prat. It had been the right decision to make, if she wasn't ready. She had other, much bigger things to deal with at the moment and he didn't want to push, but it wasn't possible to not feel awkward after telling someone you were in love with them and not hearing it back. Still, he'd promised her they would always be friends and he wanted it too, so Ron reached out and picked up a book, wrinkling his nose a little at the musty, sour smell of the ancient pages.
