After returning from Hogwarts, Hermione had spent time lying in bed trying to get her thoughts in order. When that hadn't been successful, she had decided to get started on her research. Before, she had researched the charm she used but hadn't ventured into other areas of study. It hadn't been necessary. Now she knew that it was her only hope.

So, she went to the library and found a half dozen books on Potions to start with. She hadn't left her chair since she started reading, and she wasn't sure what time it was when she heard someone enter the room. She assumed it was Harry, because Ron wasn't around that much lately. She told herself that he was just really busy, but she knew that things had been slightly awkward between them since their talk.

When Ron spoke, she was so surprised that she lost her place. "You can never start studying too early," she said finally, looking up as he sat down. "Our NEWTs are important, after all."

"Did it have to be Potions?" he asked, peering at a funny looking splatter on a page and contemplating sniffing it. "Couldn't we have started with something fun? Charms? Defense Against the Dark Arts?"

"Potions can be fun," she said, watching him stare at the book he'd picked up. "I'm not making you start with anything, Ron. It's summer, and there's time before the courses begin. You don't have to study just because I do."

She closed the book she'd been reviewing and reached for her glass of juice. The sandwich was still waiting for her to eat, but she had been sipping the juice while reading. "Are you excited about try outs tomorrow? Harry told me that you'd had a lot of people express interest."

"Yes," he said, shutting the book and putting it back in its place in the pile. "We've got enough for two sides at least, we think. Maybe a reserve or two if we don't have enough for a third. Are you going to come?"

Hermione was drinking her juice and not eating her food, which wasn't all that odd for when she was engrossed in books. He was dead certain she hadn't made it, that Kreacher had probably brought it up to her after he'd made Ron's or something. But she was paler too, looked a little worn out, and he wondered if she wasn't getting sick. "Are you feeling alright?"
