[sickbay - invasion of the bbs: open]

Jan 31, 2010 21:25

Most of the kids had agreed to come to sickbay with her with very little fuss, and Tina led them down corridors, into a turbolift, back out again, and then through the doors of sickbay at a brisk trot, all of them linking hands and being reminded every thirty seconds or so to "stay together, guys, okay ( Read more... )

"Already mucking out stalls?" George asked. "That's a tough task."

"I don't do them by myself," Chris explained. "It's too hard. The pitchfork is taller than me." He smiled down at his hands. That was something Dad had said the other day. When you get taller than the pitchfork...

"Yeah, it would be. I've mucked a couple stalls out, and that thing is hard to handle," George smiled. "What's your horse's name?"

Just then, Christine walked up.

"Hello there," she said, smiling at the boy who must be Admiral Pike. Or would be, someday. She nodded a greeting at George before turning back to the boy.

"You must be Christopher. I'm Christine." She pulled out her scanner as she spoke. "How are you feeling today, Christopher?"

"Hi," he said. He knew her - she was one of the nurses in the transporter room. He felt himself relax a little. She was a bit like his mom when she smiled...and her name was Christine, which was kind of the same as Christopher. "I'm okay," he added cautiously. He didn't want a hypospray - he really didn't. He was okay.

When she pointed the scanner at him, Chris looked back over at George. If there was a hypo he didn't want to see it coming. "We have a bunch of horses. My favorite one is Mercury, but she's gonna have a baby, so I have to ride another one instead. His name is Valiant."

Christine smiled, listening to Chris and George discussing the horses as she worked. When she was finished, she turned off the scanner and set it aside. "You're all finished," she said brightly. "You're going to be staying with George here for a little while, okay, Christopher?" He seemed to have accepted George pretty readily, but going off with him might be something else. She wanted to make sure he was all right with the idea before deserting him.

Chris fiddled with the cuffs of his sweatshirt. He hadn't thought about what would happen next - only that he'd be able to call his parents and they would come and get him. Or the ship would go to Earth and drop him off. He didn't want to stay here with anybody, 'specially someone he didn't know, even if it was okay with Mom and George seemed nice.

He glanced around the sickbay. One of the other boys, who looked a little older than him, had just come in, and he seemed to have a mom and a dad. It wasn't fair. Chris wanted his. "Where are the other kids going?" he asked, in a small voice.

"Well, some of them are going to stay with their parents," said Christine, noticing Chris eying the McCoys as they walked in. "But not everyone's parents are here today, so these nice people are going to help watch the rest of you."

"You and George will be staying with Jim and his mom." She pointed to where Captain Kirk was hiding his face in his mother's shoulder. "Have you met Jim yet?"

He looked where she was pointing, and nodded uncertainly. Jim was the boy with blue eyes who'd annoyed that pointy-eyebrows girl...Spock. Called her and the tall pointy guy elves. He looked even more scared now than earlier, like he didn't want to let go of his mom.

Christine smiled, and leaned closer to Chris. "Jim is a little nervous," she said confidentially. "I'm going to go make sure he's not hurt, and let him know that there's nothing to worry about. You stay here with George, okay? And in a few minutes you can come over and meet Jim and his mom."

"'kay." Chris uncurled himself and dangled his legs over the end of the bed, kicking a little, glad he wouldn't have to sit here much longer. His butt was going to fall asleep.
