Most of the kids had agreed to come to sickbay with her with very little fuss, and Tina led them down corridors, into a turbolift, back out again, and then through the doors of sickbay at a brisk trot, all of them linking hands and being reminded every thirty seconds or so to "stay together, guys, okay ( Read more... )

Kevin stayed behind Christine with Ephram. He smiled at Julian and braced himself for the possibility of taking in another child.

Marlena stepped up to the biobed. "Hello," she said, addressing the boy. "Are you Jules?"

"Uh huh," he answered around a mouthful of lollipop, then pulled it out of his mouth to speak more clearly. "Jules Bashir."

He nodded. "I remember." Jules didn't think it was very nice of him to point out that Jules had needed help.

He glanced up at the woman. "How do you know Ephram, Lena?"

Marlena opened her mouth, and shut it again, cutting off the first answer that sprang to mind. She was not going to be challenged on her association with Ephram by a little boy!

"We're friends," she said, flushing slightly, with an awkward glance at Riley. "Aren't we, Ephram?" Then again, he might not stick up for her--from his perspective, she was a stranger. He didn't remember her.

"...Yeah." Even though they had just met, he somehow knew she was okay to trust. "Marlena is a good friend." He hoped she wouldn't scold him for lying, since it was one of those kind-of-good tiny lies.

"So," Marlena continued, "would you like to stay with me for a while, until we figure out how to get you back--" grown up, she was about to say, but that would confuse him-- "home," she supplied instead. "Ephram's staying with me too, with our friend Kevin, here." She gestured to Riley.

Jules considered. He wasn't supposed to go home with strangers, but this woman seemed nice. And Ephram said she was his friend. "Okay," he agreed.
