And now we wait

Roger was trying not to be late. He'd spent at least half an hour the night before promising his girls that he'd be able to pick them up from day care and that he'd actually be on time this time. It might not always be his fault when practice ran over as they got closer to matches or other events, but it was hard to explain that to the bright, ( Read more... )

It took a moment for Roger to register that someone was talking to him. Glancing over, he realized that it was the same woman he'd seen in passing for who knew how long. He'd also seen the two toddlers she'd picked up with an older man enough times to know that, apparently, she was in the same perpetually late mindset as he was. He tried very hard not to acknowledge how weird it was that he'd paid enough attention to her to remember things like that, but he was single and didn't have time to actually go out the way many of his teammates - single or not - did with two very tiny ladies waiting for him at home.

Somehow, he never actually talked to many of the other parents. When he did they seemed to be complaining to him about how he'd not done some activity or volunteer event quite right.

"Tell me about it," Roger sighed and shifted where he was leaning to look at her a little better. "But if I have to endure another overdramatic lecture about abandonment from my girls, I might actually not make it."

If she was being honest with herself, she'd admit that she knew exactly who she was talking to. It was impossible not to recognize Roger Davies. Not only was he one of the best players in the league, he was also one of the most widely-recognized. At the very least because of his vastly covered separation from his first wife, which was something she tried to pretend she knew nothing about.

Yes, it was much easier to pretend he was just your average (except very much above average) dad going to pick up his children.

She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, laughing slightly.

"Don't you miss the days when they didn't talk?"

She couldn't help but flush slightly at that admission. But it sure as hell was a thought when Emmeline and David delved too far into the precocious category.

"Merlin, yes." Belatedly, he realized he may have been a bit too vehement. Laughing at himself, Roger scratched at the back of his neck. "I mean, I never knew the youngest before she could talk, but I miss when there was less sass."

Actually, maybe there hadn't even been a time like that, now that he thought about it. Dahlia had bee sassy from the jump. Once she'd met Lily and Lily decided she wasn't threatened by her new sister, they'd been on a mission to be as sassy and sarcastic as possible. He never stood a chance, especially once Lavender was gone.

Roger shrugged and grinned a bit into a wince, leaning over just enough to lower his voice and feign secretive. "We probably shouldn't say that too loud. They always look at me like I've told them the sky is orange if I say anything like that."
