I think you're right in re: A Little Princess being more resonant to a child-mind (to borrow the Victorian phrase). It both plays into and plays around with the whole 'princess' fantasy most little girls go through when they're about the right age to read it, and thus is much more deeply Meaningful. Still a lovely book, though.
Anyway, you have convinced me re: Schlitz. Also, reminded me that it might be time to give Catherine, Called Birdy a second look...
