I have just finished reading A Drowned Maiden's Hair by Laura Amy Schlitz, and I have only one thing to say to my f-list:

All of you who recommended that I read A Little Princess before all the other books in my to-read pile? You need to go out and read Schlitz's book right. now. Because I really can't remember a better tribute, or response, to ( Read more... )

Oh, I'm so glad you read it. It's one of my favorites. In a vaguely connected only by the fact that I read them around the same time and love them both kind of way, ahve you read Frances Hardinge's Fly By Night?

I have not! But I do mean to read her one of these days, since I've heard lots of good things about her writing.

Hummm. I saw that book in the store once and was tempted to pick it up but managed to resist. I suppose I should give it a second glance now, although I don't need any more books on my wishlist (or my book backlog).

*sigh*

BTW, what did you think of A Little Princess? :)

It's certainly my favorite of the Burnett books I've read (I've also read The Secret Garden and, so help me, Little Lord Fauntleroy). It was somewhat predictable, but in a satisfying way, and Sara was both admirable and flawed enough to hold my sympathies. I can see why it's such a favorite with many -- I enjoyed it, but I think I would probably have loved it even more if I'd read it when I was a child.
