I just got an e-mail from Laurie R. King telling me she's paid the entire registration fee for me to go to Bouchercon 2004 in October. She said it was a thank-you gift for running RUSS-L all these years.

*takes deep breath*

That is so sweet. I've always had the impression that King is a fabulous woman; it's nice to have it confirmed.

And Val McDermid... ! I adore her "Wire in the Blood" series.

Congratulations! You totally deserve it, of course.

Huh - I haven't heard of a lot of the authors either, though I'm definitely a Rankin fan, but the one name that jumped out was Jane Peterson Burfield, who's a piffle friend (one of those I had lunch with in London) - you probably met her at least briefly at the dinner in Stratford, and you should try to get together with her at the con. She is a dear.
