Ice Queen

This started as a response to the Thimbleful Thursday 400 word prompt "ice queen" but at 952 word I've well and truly tossed away that limit. This story does not follow on directly from As Good A Place To Start As Any.... but it is a direct consequence of that meeting.

“You were the captain of the Ojijrukar,” said the tall woman with the flawless ( Read more... )

It's a nice suitable revenge. But that poor daughter.

Yes, but she is not going to add a child into that little pressure cooker.

Cold yes, but neither insane nor that cruel.

Did Madame Pirate target this ship just to get J’sur Gharan? Keeping a special single-purpose lifeboat around seems like a lot of fuss ...

But she seems to've found some sympathizers. Will the pirates be recruiting from the engineering crew before shipping everyone else out in the lifeboats?

She was after this ship and when her research told her he'd be on it, that was a bonus.

Hmm... Interesting. I suppose J'sur Gharan will be aided somewhat by being the only one on that life boat. All the same I think I'd rather be on one of the others even sharing the life support with other passengers.

And from what I've read not totally out of line with some historic pirates (who from stories I've heard would separate the regular crew from the officers and then ask, "Are your captain and officers good men?" And woe to the one whose crew said they were not good.

He'll certainly take longer to die of starvation if his engines fail in 30 days. And he's a company executive, not a crew member. Strangely his recommendation isn't popular with 'working' engineers.

I do like that bit of in-kind revenge. Is is bafflement shock, or does he truly not understand? The line about him "insist[ing] on being called" a particular name certainly points toward obliviousness or jerkishness.

He really doesn't see that he's done anything to upset anyone - he's made a commercial recommendation that, on his data, doesn't really increase anyone's risk, and then enforced the decision based on his recommendation.

And he's been insisting that they call him (honorific)(family name) and rather pedantic abut it.
