OMFG, this is fanfic. I am not even kidding you. My wife just bought it because it was originally a Xena fic. Also, she totally loved it and read the naughty parts aloud to me. So, you know... I liked it, too.

The Company might be a good place to start, because it's one volume--if you can stand the worldview, there's then the Engineer Trilogy, even more precisely constructed to chop everyone up and spit them out.
