Principles of Effective Discipline

In reading for my Methods class I was reminded of the theory that 60% of how we come across is determined by body language, between 30% and 35% is associated with tone of voice, and only 5% to 10% percent of our meaning is in the message itself. Now I wonder if the shift in our communications to using email and other internet tools will cause a ( Read more... )

Saying "yes" while shaking my head (horizontally) or "no" while nodding (vertically) almost seems like patting my head while rubbing my belly.(I have an easy time patting my head and rubbing my belly, but the idea is that most people seem to have trouble doing them both at the same time, and it almost seems like I can't do the nodding thing while saying the word that means the opposite.) I don't know if this is exactly what you meant when you said it blows your mind, but... I suppose that in a way it blows my mind that it is hard to imagine doing that.

The difference is in where the difficulty exists. For both cases it's in the brain, like most things. But the belly head exercise is more a matter of motor skill independence (try Heitor Villa-Lobos' etude in polyrhythms, I think it's the 10th). Saying yes and shaking your head no is a difference in the signals you are sending, presumably (if you are genuine in your tone) splitting the communication where 60% of you says one thing and 40% says the opposite. It's kind of like when you have a crush on a girl in elementary school so you push her into a snowbank.

Haha. I like the analogy.

I understand the difference, and I that in my own brain too they are very different. I have to think and be very deliberate about it to nod and say something with a contrary meaning.

I will have to assume you're referring to things such as AIM? Because if you think about it e-mail has more or less taken the place of letters in which, of course, you can not detect sarcasm or subtle changes in tone and body language. I hope all is well with you my friend.

I'm referring to email, AIM, cell phone text messages, and the likes. While physical letters have the same lacking properties as these things, I think it's probable that email is used far more often by an individual now than letters were used by an individual years ago. That suggests a shift in how much of this sort of communication we take part in. All is well with me and I wish the same for you. Perhaps your classes have become a bit more challenging and interesting?

I dunno man, when letters were the only thing people had, they probably used them a lot. I should write them more often.

We had a pretty vicious game of snow football Friday. Three hours of nonstop action. The superstars of MHS videography including Jake Dembow, Steve Chaloner, Kyle Corrigan, myself, and the notorious Mr. Jeff Capone vs The 2004 Senior Tomahawk Football squad. Good times. In closing, I would both be home a majority of that time, and be wont to partake in football.

I remember a fun game last winter break involving the Loverme Three. You can expect a phone call calling your return. That game you played sounds intense and I'd love to play in something of that caliber.

Uh, better classes. Hmm...I'm taking intro to Sociology, intro to drawing, intro to photo, and writing short stories. So maybe not more challenging, but hopefully more interesting.

I've found that in email and IM people sometimes think I'm being sarcastic when I'm not. Even with written word how you say things is important, but we don't have the advantage of intonation or body language, so we have to use words, and things can get verbose. Maybe the world is getting better for autistic people.

Snow football sounds really fantastic.
