In reading for my Methods class I was reminded of the theory that 60% of how we come across is determined by body language, between 30% and 35% is associated with tone of voice, and only 5% to 10% percent of our meaning is in the message itself. Now I wonder if the shift in our communications to using email and other internet tools will cause a shift in these percentages, since the new communication contains no body language or tone. I'm always having trouble detecting sarcasm online because it relies heavily on tone. This original theory also aligns with the fact that animals respond almost entirely to body language and the rest is in tone. So are we moving further away from our animal roots via technology? I guess that's making the assumption that we actually are shifting into a greater value on actual message, language, over gesture and tone. It still blows my mind to shake my head no (side to side) while saying yes or vice versa.
If you are going to be in the area of Merrimack between December 14th and January 23rd, and if you enjoy snow football, then let's have at it!
