Dick had the same feelings about this as when Tim had arrived. And a truck load more. Babs was now stuck here too, and that was unfortunate, but mostly uncomfortable. Yes, she was one of his oldest friends, she was also the person he'd had feelings for since the age of 14 and the woman he had recently been engaged to ( ... )

Tim ambled along next to Dick in uncomfortable silence, wondering if Dick and Babs were ever going to get to some point where they could stand in the same city-block and not up the tension six notches. So far as he knew they'd called it quits when Dick had thrown down the yellow cape - all he'd ever seen them do was work together (at best) and shoot each other snide remarks (at least.)

Well, with Dick out of vocal commission - mostly - it wasn't gonna happen today. The best they could do, he figured, was update Babs on the situation and maybe keep Jilly out of the crossfire. So he was protective, so what? Schrodinger could go stuff a sock in it until she'd had a couple days' to--

-- recover.

Babs was in a wheelchair.

Tim stopped dead.

The part of his brain that had internalized enough training kept recording observations - older, glasses, shorter hair, older, how far in the future--

"Second Batgirl." he murmured, shock turning to realization. Oh, no.

He stepped forward, faltered. ". . . Babs?"

For the first time in a long while, Cass was excited. Here at last was someone she knew, for sure, she could trust to be the way she was supposed to be, to be the way she remembered. Even if she couldn't quite understand the current situation, she knew enough about Dick and Barbara's history to know it was an awkward one. She knew well enough not to speak when she reached them - and no one ever needed to worry about her speaking out of line, anyway? - but she figured simply being there would be alright.

It would probably be worse for Tim, she realized. As young as he was, there was no chance he would be used to the sight of her in a wheelchair. And from the way he hesitated, from the uncertain way he was walking towards her when she reached them, she could tell it was going to be hard for him.

Cass simply stood back, waiting for them to exchange their greetings. She didn't need to say anything. She only nodded, in respect, and in relief. The Oracle was here, and that was a comfort.

Barbara turned her head when she heard the familiar nickname. She turned her head and was greeted by two familiar faces. Dick was there...looking the same as ever. And a few feet away from them she saw Cass. She was relieved that she was alright.

Then her eyes settled on the unfamiliar sight. Tim...was shorter. More like he didn't hit puberty yet. "Tim? What happened to you? Did you shrink?" she joked.

Bruce wasn't with them, but she shouldn't be surprised. He wasn't one for reunions.

It seeemed everyone was here and alright, she was glad for that.

Oh. Suck. He hadn't ever told Tim, had he? And well, obviously not, no. Goddamn it. This day could have gone so much smoother. Why. Why singing? Why today? When there was so much he needed to say, and needed to say seriouslyHis morning with Jilly had been spent pretty much in silence and he was fairly certain she was more or less convinced he thought less of her. Which, of course, nothing could be further from the truth. All he'd been able to do was sit there, holding her like he'd promised he would as Robin, all those ...years ago. Yeah. He was still trying to wrap his head around that. The conversation they desperately needed to have had been put on hold, at least until Dick could communicate without singing in tune to The Monkees.
