Yamamoto was born a sound sleeper. It had taken him years to find an alarm clock that was loud enough to wake him up when he did have a reason to (baseball training counted as a valid reason, school didn’t). However, somewhere in the middle of the battle against the Varia the Rain Guardian had suddenly begun to wake up from the smallest of things; a cat outside the window, a bird chirping, the rustling of wind in the trees. This habit had escalated ever since he had been transported ten years into the future; he had woken up every time either of his two friends had turned around in their beds.

This certain night he first had no idea what had disturbed his sleep. It wasn’t raining at the moment, he would have noticed, and it was still too early for birds. He laid still, arms crossed behind his head, and waited for the sound to come back. One second past, two seconds past and he was just about to close his eyes again as he heard a hardly audible sob from the room next to his own. Gokudera’s room ( ... )

Gokudera jerked as he heard the knock on the door, his heart beating hard in his chest. He had been sure that he was the only one awake and therefore entirely alone - with enough privacy to cry and be left undisturbed. He scrambled for his dignity, wiping his eyes hastily with the sleeve of his t-shirt and sniffed once, trying remove all traces of his condition and pondered whether or not he should simply feign sleeping. He hadn’t locked the door - that was true - but if he laid down now and closed his eyes anyone who’d enter would be easily fooled. He wasn’t entirely sure if he wanted to be awake for anyone at the moment.

However, after an afterthought, he sighed and ran a hand through his tousled hair. Perhaps there wasn’t any use in pretending anyway. If it was Haru she would just wake him up and he wasn’t sure if he could feign complete unconsciousness. And Chrome wouldn’t knock that loudly … so if it was Yamamoto, well. He’d probably declare it pointless and walk away again shouldn’t he reply or he might just decide to ( ... )

So he had decided not to try pretending he was asleep then? Of course, Yamamoto couldn’t read the other teen’s thoughts but he thought that he knew what had been going around in Gokudera’s mind just now. He opened the door half-way, smiling slightly.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I couldn’t sleep and then I thought I heard you move around so I figured you were awake too.”

Coming up with excuses to invade on the Storm Guardian’s privacy was becoming a sport. Gokudera had walls so thick that it had taken him more than a year to even start reaching the other side and his pride would never allow him to admit that he had been crying. No, it was better like this. Safer. Gokudera would be able to see through his act and yet have a chance to accept his company without making himself seem weak.

He should have guessed. “Not everyone sleeps like a rock, you know,” he spat at his intruder, crossing his arms grumpily but nonetheless saying nothing about abhorring his company. “Is that a tradition of yours, knocking on other people’s doors in the middle of the night?” In the split second between permitting whoever was outside entrance and realizing that the person was - indeed - Yamamoto, Gokudera had hastily decided to settle for an alibi concocted out of a mixture of both of his previous options; it was Yamamoto that had woken him up.

This behaviour was even more childish than any of his alternatives, yes, but it was at the same time a subconscious scrambling for his pride in the likely event that the Rain Guardian just might have heard him crying. And that was inexcusable.

To make sure that the baseball captain took no unnecessary indication that he was welcome, the Italian continued to fix him with a glare for another moment or so until finally breaking the glance and drifting his eyes dispassionately towards the other end ( ... )

In Gokudera-ish this behaviour probably meant “I’m kinda glad you came but I’m too proud to admit it”. He could be wrong, of course, but in the end he could only try his best. Still smiling the black haired teen closed the door, walked over to Gokudera’s bed and sat down.

“I thought I was used to sleeping in strange places by now but somehow this isn’t really the same as a training camp.” He sighed softly and leaned back against the wall, eyes settled on a drawer on the other side of the room. “I guess things have been a bit too confusing lately. First we were transported to the future and now this. It’s rather unsettling, don’t you think? How everything happened so quickly.”

They hadn’t really talked about it before. They didn’t really talk about such things. But there was no Tsuna here now and not even Tsuna had been able to comfort Gokudera as he had been suffering from a bad conscience upon finding out about the future Vongola boss’ death. For now the Storm Guardian would have to do with Yamamoto instead. Somehow he still ( ... )
