Fuji had never truly gotten over his little brother's sudden disappearance. Yuuta's favorite racket sprawled across his neatly made bedspread, exactly how he'd deposited it the first time.

As he walked down the hall, Fuji said a silent prayer, hoping that Yuuta-chan would step out abruptly, if only to ignore him.

He sighed, traces of a hollow smile tugging at his lips - the best mask he could ask for. It was not the time to be overwhelmed with nostalgia. The mother hen was waiting, with a task on hand. His friends' safety was at stake.

He couldn't afford to lose anyone else.

The kitchen was surprisingly empty. Habitually, Fuji reached for the primitive tool box, carrying it in his right hand. Some planks would be nice now.

It was a while before the tensai located Oishi, pensive before the window. "I found the toolbox," Fuji said softly, as if afraid to disrupt the other boy's train of thoughts.

Oishi snapped up straight at being pulled out of his thoughts so suddenly, although he recovered quickly, offering a smile to the tennis tensai. "Excellent. I found a few boards in the backyard. There might have been more, but I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible," he replied, figuring Fuji would understand Oishi's want to keep safe. Leading the other boy to where he had rested the boards near the front door, he continued speaking. "They should be enough for the front of the house, at least. We could probably put some furniture or mattresses in front of the other windows, just to be extra safe." Oishi never knew that being forced to sit through so many zombie movies would come in handy. "Hopefully, this won't keep up too long, ne ( ... )

"Thank you." For finding the boards and worrying about us, but Fuji did not say. He unquestioningly trailed behind the vice captain, listening to his careful instructions.

"Hopefully." Fuji repeated with a soft smile. Slender fingers curled around the edges of rough wood, tightening just as Oishi's voice rang out, before quickly relaxing again. "Ah, I -" For a lengthy second, Fuji remained silent, contemplating. There was no need to make Oishi any more worried than he presently was.

"I'm fine." He heard himself say with a perfectly normal tone. He was getting better at this. "Now, where shall these boards go, hm?"

It wasn't that Ryoma wanted to disobey Oishi's orders, he had some respect for the vice-captain, after all. But he figured that it wouldn't hurt if he came down- to help them or just to observe, it didn't really matter. It was better than reading the useless entries in the journals that were just random babble about turning into kids (they were more like babies, he thought). He just had one comment about them- Mada mada dane.

Scooping up Karu-chan in his arm, he idly made his way downstairs. The plants didn't attack kids and he was aware of the fact that he belonged to that category, so really, he was safe. And if he understood it correctly, his presence might actually help in warding off the killer vines.

There wasn't a chance that Oishi was going to believe Fuji, but that type of answer had at least been what he was expecting. He gave Oishi an even stronger hint that Fuji wasn't fine at all. But he didn't want to question the tensai, at least not yet. Maybe he'd see if he could get Eiji or Saeki to talk to him about it another time. Those two both knew him better.

"Ah." He hadn't really thought about it yet. "Hm, well it might damage the inside of the house to put them up inside, but that would be a lot safer than going out there..." He took a moment to glance out the window at the scene of the town.

It was then that he sensed another presence. Tearing his eyes away from the window, Oishi was greeted with the sight of the young tennis prodigy. He frowned. Even if the plants seemed to be avoiding all of the children, he didn't want to take any chances. Somehow, though, he felt that he wasn't going to be able to get Echizen to listen to him.
