Hiruma was taking a nap, as he tended to in the afternoon, especially after a hard day's training the other day. He snored lightly into the pillow in the master bedroom.

His ear twitched in his sleep. Again. The sound causing it to twitch finally woke him from his slumber. He lifted his head and turned his ear towards the direction of the sound. In his stupor, he wasn't sure what that high pitched screeching and hissing was.

Then it occurred to him. He knew that sound. It was the sound of his bats in the attic. But it wasn't a sound he'd heard before, it was... a distress call? A distressed call layered with scratching and wings flapping and something else.

Hiruma growled and made his way to the attic, only to find his roost of messenger bats being assaulted and killed by sky snakes. Sky snakes?! In the ATTIC? Hiruma was incensed. He grabbed a shovel (he couldn't remember why he had a shovel in the attic, but how useful!) and broke the window to allow his bats to escape. The small creatures were more than capable of ( ... )

Claire had been home for about half an hour from training with Bruce, spending some time just with herself, getting something to eat together while looking over the recent news in the journal. The door to their bedroom was closed, which told her that Hiruma was taking a nap-- nothing unusual about that, though it did leave her with nothing really to do.

Not with Kotaro gone, her dad out, and Musashi... somewhere...

Not to mention that he didn't really seem to feel too comfortable around her. It was weird looks and a slightly awkward air around. She really wished he got more involved, but... couldn't have everything, right? It would probably come to pass eventually when he'd get used to her, or something.

She heard the noise. Didn't realize that Hiruma was awake, however. Brow furrowed, she cocked her head at the stairs, about to head upstairs when--

"WHAT?!" in a second she was running up, eyes wide as she saw him climb down from the attic. "What's go-- what happened?!"

Hiruma growled furiously and held up the limb corpse of a dead skysnake.

"THIS! THESE WERE IN THE ATTIC, EATING MY BATS!" He threw the bat angrily on the ground and stormed down the stairs and peered out the window, something he did when he was angry away.

However, he didn't expect to see what he saw.

"Oh fuck," He whirled on Claire, hand throbbing. Hold off for a second, please hold off. "Where are the other three?!"

He didn't need to wait for her answer, though. Couldn't. He could already feel the nausea from his intense need to protect, protect his roostmates, protect his home.

"D-dammit, not now! This isn't important enough!" He reached for one of his guns but it was already too late. His fingers were stretching painfully.

"F-f-fuck."

Claire stared, wide-eyed, at the snake in his hand. "They-- they fly?!"

What a horrifying concept.

"I-- Hiruma, I don't think-- this is-- I mean--" He stalked off angrily and she felt somewhat helpless. It didn't stop there, however, not when the worst happened, almost promptly.

"Oh fuck no," she muttered, shaking her head, rushing over to his side. "Kota has been gone for a bit-- dad went out, and I don't know where Musashi went. Is there-- goddammit, is there anything you want me to do? What do you want me to do?!"

Kasa drew her katana. She headed out into the street. Her Kowloon blood had been craving a good fight, and she was tense with anticipation. She leapt into the air, spinning and slashing as the creatures attacked her from all angles, using the deadly grace and agility possessed by all Black Bloods.

To the eyes of any normal human, all that was visible was the light glinting off of her sword, flying scales and feathers, and a dark whirlwind in the centre of it all that was Kasa as she fought. Her fangs were bared, and her face became splashed with blood as each strike landed with deadly accuracy. Her ears were filled with the screeches of the Sky-Snakes and the sound of her sword slicing through scales. It had been too long since her last good fight.

Max was on the roof, her usual thinking spot, when the first snakes appeared in the city. She jotted a note (though part of her knew Iggy wouldn't let her rush off to fight them alone, let alone Zero who knew, at least in part, why she hated them so much) in the journals. As usual, she waited a bit, responded and jumped into her room, dropping the journal onto her bed. Quickly, the hybrid ran downstairs for her weapons and ran out the front door, leaping into the air ( ... )

Zero danced.

He had no fear of snakes. Not now, not with a body of steel and silicon, not with his armor.

He took out the steel saber he'd gotten to replace his beam saber (which was now more like a taser than a sword - effective, but not what he wanted in this case).

The snakes were flying quite high, but with one powerful leap he could get the ones as high as first-story windows, spinning as he did. If his jet boots worked, he could jump even higher, but he hadn't found a mechanic skilled enough to get them working yet.

Perhaps he should talk to this Iggy about that...

It rained snake scales and blood, and Zero smiled.

Iggy shot out the window, narrowly avoided a snake - felt its wings brush by his face as he spun desperately out of the way - and rose straight up, ears straining.

Normally, this much noise would actually be helpful - it bounced off of everything, gave him a better picture than if it was perfectly quiet. But now, with his senses oddly dulled, it was just a cacophony, leaving him lost and confused. He could still pick the snakes out as they came at him, could hear the frantic beating of wings and the whistle of displaced air, and that was enough to keep him swinging, turning in the air to face them as they rushed him. With a reach longer than Max's, it kept him further out of range as well, which was comforting - Max had mentioned that these things were poisonous.

And, naturally, he had a few secret weapons tucked away. A flick of his wrist, and a few moments later, an explosion shattered the air, sending bits of snake everywhere - gross, but definitely cool.

Max wasn't going to be happy.

"IGGY!" She screamed at him, hatred overriding her fear temporarily. "WHAT DID I TELL YOU ABOUT THAT!?"

Of course he had bombs. She'd warned him about his stupid bombs, how bad an idea it was to use them here... And he still did it ( ... )

Riful padded down the streets with an easy, deliberate grace only a "child" of her size could achieve, glancing up toward the heavens where the snakes flew, their swirling, erratic paths cutting through the evening sky. They were such strange, beautiful creatures, she thought, absentmindedly flexing her arms and frowning briefly when it became apparent that she could not transform. Had her yoki been dampened that severely? No matter. These odd beasts would be easy enough to capture ( ... )

Of course the Queen's forces were mobilized during such a time. Thus, Grell preened his uniform and lovingly carried his scythe with pride. It wasn't often he could take it out in public without causing panic amongst people.

Humming a waltz as he walked, the Reaper made his way down the street before spotting the young girl.
"Pleasant Evening, Little Miss." He greeted with a cheery smile, vaulting himself up using a few crates before standing beside her.

"Would you mind a little company whilst you fetch dinner?"

Riful seemed unsurprised at the new arrival, lazily picking bits of serpent flesh out of her fingernails before she turned to address him.

"Hm? You're not scared?" She tilted her head and regarded the man curiously. "That's a beautiful weapon you have, such fine craftsmanship!" The little girl smiled widely, wiping her bloodstained hands on her dress. It was rare that she encountered humans that were so calm at the sight of her...then again, given the nature of this place it was entirely possible this odd gentleman wasn't human at all. Regardless, she always appreciated company.

"Of course, you can stay~ I don't mind...it might get a little messy though."

Ah, the poor dear didn't know! How refreshing. Grell smiled, all his teeth razor sharp canines. His eyes were a little too intensely green. Almost a glowing yellow, even...

"Why thank you, Little Miss, I do admire Her greatly." He swung the scythe, idly taking out a snake in the process. "Lieutenant Grell Sutcliff at your service, Little Miss. You'll find I'm not quite the ordinary human many mistake me for."

Grell sighed, taking her hand and kissing the back of it.
"Let us make a beautiful mess, Little Miss. How often do we get such a fun opportunity, hm?"

Zexion scrabbled through the streets on bird feet, evading snakes. In his current state, the whole city looked like a smorgasboard. Bolstered by the unnatural confidance his bird-form gave and aided by the instincts of a species which hunted snakes, he eagerly snapped one out of the air before ducking the bite of another.

"Merry day, merry day, a feast for me upon this eve, delicious! Oh!" he shouted in glee as he stabbed another snake straight through with his beak.

Over the roofs of Rivelata (though he took care not to burn anything), Axel came blazing like a comet. He counted each snake he killed, hoping that 23 was a sufficient number at this point to beat Kuja.

He wasn't going ALL out, since he knew that the boost Kuja had given him would not last forever, but it did feel good to leave a streak of flames behind him as he went.

Axel landed, and saw a strange bird with a blue gray crest, jabbering in glee and eating snakes. He peered at it in confusion for a moment, and then realized it was Zexion. If hissing, spitting, poisonous serpents weren't actively trying to attack HIM, Axel would have jeered. Instead, he lit himself on fire and tore after a particularly large horde of them that flew between him and Zexion.

Zexion squwaked in alarm as the fire burned through what he had been previously considering his lunch. For a split second, he was lucid, wondering what the hell he was doing out here in the midst of this swarm of deadly snakes when he should have been inside somewhere safe.

The moment passed; and he was back to running as far as he could from the BRIGHT BURNING.
