lazy Sunday

I got an e-mail informing me that the Borders Express a few blocks from my house will be going out of business. I know, the world is not exactly suffering from a shortage of Borders stores, but this news saddens me nonetheless. This was the location where back in the day, back when it was still Waldenbooks, my mom would take me every Sunday to pick ( Read more... )

I'm sorry to hear a bookstore that holds good memories for you is closing down. I lost the one I associated with my childhood (which was a sweet little indie named Esmerelda) years ago, and I still think of it wistfully.

Re: Borders the company however, expect to see more closures in the next year; they're rumored to be folding due to bankruptcy. I do know the company I'm at now, Barnes & Noble, is looking to buy, however (just like they did with B. Dalton a while back).

It saddens me to think that bookstores, especially independent ones, are slowly going the way of the dodo. It's also disconcerting how I can almost never find a bookstore whenever I go to a mall, yet there always multiple Abercrombies, Coach stores, blah blah blah. Fuck leather bags, give me a book any day.

I've heard that rumor a few years back, I think, in a marketing class. On a more positive note (though it still makes me feel a bit bad for even thinking it), I hope they'll have some good deals at the locations that will be closing. I once went to a Borders that was cleaning out its DVD section so as to just focus on books, and I got some stuff for 40% off, which was pretty nice.

Oh me too, believe me. I can't think about it too often. Partly because I worked at one for nearly two years, and partly because I now work at one of the former place's largest competitors. (No one is destroying the current book market more effectively than Amazon.com though, trust me. B&N is about as big as physical stores get, and we can't even touch them and have to worry about them too.) I didn't want to leave Book Works, but I really wasn't given much choice, so you do what you can. I feel comforted at least knowing that I work with awesome people.

I think it's more of a likelihood than a rumor these days, as they're operating entirely out of debt and have been for ages (whereas B&N operates from profits). But yes, the guilt-causing upside to us whenever anything closes is some nice clearance prices.

I know this feeling. Oddly enough, I work in the book store that I used to go to as a child. There's little nook in the childrens section that still makes me feel nostalgic when I pass it.

omg yay! I'm so happy you like it because like I said, I felt a bit iffy on the tracklisting! And of course I used Zooey and Joe, like there was any other option.I'm looking forward to your epic cast list!
