I don't write YA, but that's very interesting to me. I wonder, if someone is writing futuristic YA, how should they make their teenagers act? Invent new slang? Avoid it as much as possible?
It depends on how futuristic. Near future stuff, or SpecFic that is set in a contemporary time-frame with changes to the world should probably have fairly current teen lingo, attitudes and activities.
Far future has a much wider range, of course, but there are still some fundamentals of being "teen" that defy time/world and a real teen can sniff those out.
I think in essence her work is to test interest and believability by YA's target market (Young adults).
I do think futuristic YA should have invented slang as slang is a part of language in all cultures. It just shouldn't be overdone.
