I'd like to point you towards just looking at you i enjoy myself by suitablyskippy, who writes such a good Komaeda that I'm a bit worried about her. It centres on Hinata and Komaeda but features a lot of the other characters as well, and it's got a really wonderful sense of ( Read more... )

I agree entirely about Matt Smith - I've been quite apathetic lately about Who, the love is waning, the storylines have not been great. But Matt has always kept me watching because regardless of the writing, the plots, the companions, the whatever, his portrayal of the Doctor is always so damn entertaining.

I actually feel slightly bad about loving him so much. I thought Nine would always be my Doctor! But Smith is just so right for the role. Whoever succeeds him is going to have a hell of a job living up to the precedent he's set.

BARRET IS THE BEST

i still love the battle theme, i can't help myself. I especially love that one acapella version of the boss battle theme, have you heard that? By this guy! Although I guess the video has spoilers if you care about that kind of thing? You could just open it in another tab I guess, haha.
They also did Man with the Machine Gun! And the Final Battle from FF9 too, haha

I've had 'The Man with the Machine Gun' stuck in my head for the past few days, and that's just firmly ensured that it'll stay in there for another week or so. But it's pretty great (both the original piece of music and that cover), so I suppose I can cope with that. Thank you for the links!

What you say about Who resonates with me too. I really love Matt Smith's Doctor. I probably wouldn't stop watching, because it's a Thing we do with a friend of ours and I like the social aspect, but Smith certainly sustained me during some trying times. I do like change though, so am hoping for another great actor!

Some VII fans really can be a nightmare. I thought I'd read along with a screenshot Let's Play as I played, in case it gave interesting insight into the game, but I had to stop; the commenters seemed to be attacking later games in the series more than they were discussing VII itself.

I've always been a little surprised that Cloud doesn't interest me more, because I tend to be fascinated by characters with an incredibly flawed perception of reality. That's actually a large part of the reason I started replaying this game; I wanted to give Cloud's story another chance to grab me, because in theory it seems like something I'd really like. (I AM SO GLAD I'M NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO'S BORED BY SEPHIROTH. Kuja was a much more appealing villain to me.)

I've previously played the game all the way up to just before the final boss, at which point my memory card decided it would be hilarious to stop functioning, so don't worry about spoilers!

Barret definitely doesn't think things through on a moral level. I think he has quite a black-and-white, good-and-evil view of the world. Shinra is evil, so any action that impedes Shinra is good, regardless of other consequences.

I definitely spoke to someone in Midgar who mentioned that innocent people had been killed in the explosion, yes. It really struck me. I like that this game doesn't just go 'these guys are blowing up a power station, BUT IT'S COMPLETELY FINE BECAUSE THEY'RE THE GOOD GUYS'.

I'm also not a Moffat fan. I'll give him credit for doing some interesting things with time travel, but he tends to get a bit wrapped up in his own cleverness and I don't think he's very strong on characterisation. It's a great shame that Smith's only been working with him. On the other hand, Smith managed to make Moffat's series watchable for me, so I suppose that's one positive thing that came out of their combination.

That's a perfect description of Barret - I've never heard it said better! And I agree, it's great that a lot of the game is vague on who the good guys are. They make the people seem real without being too bleak about humanity.

Unfortunately, Smith didn't manage to save it for me. Perhaps I would have liked him under a different writer.
