Finally pulled together the courage to play more Metal Gear Solid! (Metal Gear Solid requires courage to play not because it is terrifying, like Shadow of the Colossus, but because I am so humiliatingly bad at it. I need to erect protective shields around my self-esteem before attempting this game ( Read more... )

I love the torture scene - Theoretically there are three ways for it to end - beat the torture, submit or die. But since there's nothing ever stopping you submitting, there's no real chance of death. So why have it there? Why not just have an automatic submit when the health runs out? Because the point is that you chose to press the button. If you can't beat the torture, it's not a case of you not being able to save Meryl, you chose to press the button, and put continuing with the game above Meryl's life ( ... )

I was expecting something like that, but more inline with when they did it with Tomb Raider, when they just designed an alternate skin for her. Somehow the fact that that comes with the game - ie they're her canonical breasts - makes is seem more like an invasion of privacy. I think something might be wrong with me if I'm respecting the privacy of fictional characters (and finding seeing pictures of breasts anything but a joyous occasion).

Thinking about it, huskies don't really attack people. I think they're wolves. For some reason the Shadow Moses Disposal Facility is bisected by a small tunnel full of wolves. You'd think somebody would've objected.

I remember that, but what about before Foxhound and the next-gen forces moved in? Did they just run two separate facilities, or did they all get pissed on?

That makes sense, but I'm gonna stick with believing that new employee induction consists of being handed a cardboard box containing a hasmat suit, ID card, locker key and a wolfcub.

That would explain why he can't spread his genes, not why he isn't interest in doing so. Am I completely making up the idea that at that point in the game Snake considers genes to determining fate (ie before Naomi's monologue at the end), resents himself (and Big Boss) for being nothing but killers, and so doesn't want to spread his 'killer' genes? I remember the line "Some people just need killing" as having two meanings - Big Boss needs to be killed, and they both need there to be killing.
