The great thing about the Final Fantasy VIII universe is that any timeline discrepancies can be explained away using Time Compression. It's the ultimate plot device!

So. Squall got Rinoa pregnant, and then went off and got himself killed, as you do. Rinoa went crazy and decided to compress time, because hey, she'd destroy everything but at least she'd get to see Squall again in crazy-insane-twisted-flashback form!

As it transpired, Time Compression does really freaking weird stuff to pregnant women whose lives are sustained purely by their magic (not enough pregnant men have experienced it to be sure of the effect on them). At some point between Rinoa/Ultimecia splintering into tiny tiny pieces and her reappearing at the Orphanage in order to pass her powers on, her unborn child was ripped from her womb, aged twenty years (apparently Time Compression also does weird things to the unborn children of women whose lives are sustained purely by their magic this is the stupidest thing ever) and deposited at a random point in time in the ( ... )

I just thought you ought to know that I laughed for, like, five hours at the entire not questioning of language-knowingness bit.

But, you know, it actually kind of works because Laguna doesn't really know language that well. I mean, look at how many sayings he screws up! Watch him flail his way through the English language! Or, er, whatever language he actually speaks. Galbadian? Whatever.
